Books in the Kitchen
Over the weekend, one of my Facebook friends mentioned that she'd spent the day knee-deep in IKEA assemblage and that now she had 10 Expedit bookcases. Another friend commented that she has an Expedit bookcase in her kitchen - her book collection had gotten so big that she had to expand into every room, even the kitchen.
When we redesigned our kitchen, a built-in bookcase was on the top of my "must-have" list. It makes so much sense to me. I have tons of cookbooks and it's logical to keep them where I use them - in the kitchen.
Plus, I'm in the "books are pretty" camp - I think they make great decor.

Islands make perfect little spots to tuck a few books.
Ah, the bookcase wall - I love it so much. And how convenient, too (though a cookbook collection that big would be pretty daunting).
A narrow bookcase along a wall is an efficient way to add books to a tight space.
I like the way this space makes the most of a kitchen corner - a desk in the kitchen offers a perfect spot for a laptop (which, along with the books, is how I find recipes). I also like the idea of using pretty boxes and baskets to store pamphlet-style cookbooks.
This bookcase is perfectly placed between those two windows.
When you're planning a kitchen, it's important to be realistic. This is how things tend to shake out in my kitchen - I've got a desk, which is a storage spot, and I use my laptop at my island.
No, this isn't a kitchen. But wouldn't this type of rack work well in one?
