Set the Mood With Rich Color, Light — and 6 Great Finds
A dining room seems pretty straightforward at first: a few chairs and a table … what else do you need? In reality, the design of the average dining room is much more complicated than that. If you want to create something stylish and practical, there are a lot of factors to consider: How often will it be used? Will it be casual, or mainly for entertaining? Do you need to include furniture other than the dining table and chairs?
When designing the dining room for her home in Sacramento, California, interior designer Kerrie L. Kelly created a room that is a gorgeous combination of practicality and style. After considering space, function and light, she implemented a look that is welcoming to guests, but also stays true to the style of the rest of her home. The dark walls, bold furniture, and glamorous accessories all blend together beautifully in a room that is delightfully dignified.

Kelly painted her dining room a delicious shade of the darkest dark blue — Benjamin Moore's aptly named Almost Black. Since the room has plenty of space and light from large glass doors, the color maintains the size — rather than making the room feel too big or too small. A structured Restoration Hardware dining table (which is currently unavailable) is set off by cozy-looking cream leather dining chairs from West Elm, and a black and white striped IKEA rug to pull the two together.
The statement piece in this room is definitely the unusual art-deco-like Riviera Pendant from Corbett Lighting. This gorgeous piece sends a soft glow over the room, complementing the natural lighting from the glass doors, and illuminating the table and the cute little nook Kelly created in the corner. A simple but eclectic display of wall art gives a sense of sophisticated quirkiness. Kelly combined silhouettes from West Elm (which are also unfortunately no longer available) with collected antiques, and a piece of art by her father.

Riviera Ten Light Pendant
Chandeliers and ceiling pendants are always popular choices for dining rooms, since they add a sense of instant drama. Choose a piece that will make a statement, aligns with your style, but also actually works as a practical light fixture — not just as decoration.
Jonathan Adler Letter Pillow
In her dining room's reading nook, Kelly accented a red leather chair found at Home Goods with a classy custom pillow from Jonathan Adler Home. The combination, along with the bookshelves and several antique clocks, create an almost old school gentleman's club vibe.
Keep Calm and Carry On Print
A new classic, Kelly chose the Keep Calm and Carry On print in a dramatic navy blue — almost perfectly matching her dark blue walls.
Stockholm Rug, Black Stripe | IKEA
This funky striped rug from IKEA is a great pick, not only because it ties together the bold combination of white chairs and a black table, but it also has a durable flat weave that's easy to clean.
Cody Dining Chair
Size is important when thinking about what chairs to choose for your dining room table. You want to make sure that your guests will have enough space to push back from the table and pass food around without things getting cramped and awkward. These comfortable West Elm dining chairs are armless — which saves on space, but not on style.
Acorn Filigree Damask
If you have big windows or glass doors in your dining room as Kelly did, implementing heavy-duty curtains or other window coverings could be a good idea — particularly if your windows face West. Save your guests from a blinding sunset glare and draw the curtains for mood lighting during early dinners. Kelly chose a rustic-chic filigree on a heavy burlap-like cloth. More about Kerrie L.
