American Pastoral: Inspiring Farmhouse Style
Ah, the farmhouse. Is there any style that is more true-blue American? It's such a classic vernacular style; while function came first, the form is so pleasing and induces nostalgia for a simpler time. Walking into a cozy farmhouse can fill your soul with comfort and calmness.
You don't have to go to extremes and move to Amish country to achieve farmhouse comfort. Here are a few images to show how you can incorporate farmhouse inspirations in your own home. Before you know it, you'll be calling out "Night Johnboy" after you're all tucked in.

Crisp white house, long covered porch, white picket fence and a neatly trimmed lawn. Idyllic.
Flowering vines and a pergola make a great setting for fresh local food and good company.
I highly recommend clicking on the DiGuisseppe link and checking out all of their work. They have a barn restoration and several Bucks County-worthy stone farmhouse renovations posted on Houzz.
This is actually Mrs. Limestones gorgeous Brooklyn townhouse, yet this modern kitchen has country appeal in the wooden stools, the white cabinets and the beautiful soapstone countertops. All this image is missing is a fresh apple pie!
The sink, antiques, barrel under the sink and the pitcher all have classic appeal.
This sink is just to die for. The green cabinets make it a little country without being kountry. This is also a great place to work with fresh picked flowers.
This is a renovated barn.
Stone walls are very colonial New England to me.
Well placed antiques tell the story of the past.
This is a great modern kitchen tucked in between stone walls.
They just don't make them like this anymore!
Door. Beams. Stone. To. Die. For!
Beams again. Is this a flying buttress? I never know what the heck a flying buttress is. Oh wait, I think that's a cathedral thing...
Beautiful simple vernacular form.
Barn-inspired modern.
Outbuildings are another farm bonus.
Wildflower Meadow.
Kitchen Garden
Stone patios; originally they would be made from stone found on site.
This is a former dairy barn in my neighborhood with a Samuel Mockbee designed addition. I love that they owner has added modern fiberglass Eames rockers to the front porch.
Do not be afraid of showing off your gardening implements. Also, do not fear brightening things up with eye-popping paint colors.
A rooster in the kitchen is good luck, and it beats the heck out of having a real one wake you up at 4 a.m.
The hearth is the heart of a country home.
This is a modern version of a farmhouse table.
I just included this one because it's so beautiful. It's in the U.K.
Don't forget your American flag!
