Cleaning Up Your Bathroom's Design
When you're renting, or not wanting to necessarily go around gutting rooms, the bathroom can be a hard room to overhaul. Especially in older places with character. In two weeks my husband and two small children and I move into a 1930s renovated house (ideabooks on that progress undoubtedly to come). I love the place, though some design elements of the bathrooms give me pause.
Though the following beautiful bathrooms in no way need any kind of overhaul, they exhibit strategies and ideas for cleaning up the look of your bathroom:
WALLS. Though you may not be able to change the quirky tiling or the bathtub that, admit it, you wish was an antique claw-footed, color can revolutionize such a small space. And takes relatively little effort. Since the rule of color continuity throughout a house is to choose a few colors to use in varying proportions, choose the bold color for the bathroom and give it a literal face lift. Alternatively, paper a portion of the wall space (or back of the door, or ceiling) with detailed wallpaper that brings out the best of the room.
DETAILS. Sometimes the room's reinvention can be as straightforward as meticulously choosing the details. Rather than try to hide the visual liabilities, work with them and improve them with your tasteful and creative choices. With colored towels, a rug, and other accessories, make a statement with the character rather than try to hide it.
WALL ART. Changing out the vanity mirror often changes the entire look of the bath. From long mod lit mirrors to cheap vintage flea market finds, mirrors help set the mode. Deliberate art (especially displayed in unusual ways) can create cohesion and beauty.
ACCESSORIES. Don't diminish the seemingly small finishing touches. The choice of soap dishes, toothbrush holders, magazine racks, etc, can polish everything off or make it all wrong. Add pleasing touches. A plant. A corner of candles and bath salts for a mini spa. Even if the only thing you do AT ALL to overhaul your bath's design is get a funky shower curtain: make it a great one.
Happy soaping up.
