New Classics: Patricia Urquiola's Fjord Seating
Soothingly sculptural and designed for comfort, this contemporary seating collection goes way beyond bringing up the rear
Furniture designed by those with an architectural background is almost always intriguing. One of my favorite designers is Patricia Urquiola. Her influences include architecture, ergonomics, Spanish traditions, organic shapes, technology and her former thesis advisor, Achille Castiglioni. The type of objects she designs runs the gamut and includes bathtubs, light fixtures, sofas, benches, tile murals, rugs and even bidets.
One line gaining popularity with designers today is Urquiola's Fjord seating, manufactured by Moroso. The collection includes lounge chairs, a swivel chair, bar stools and poufs. Should the collection ever go out of production, I imagine architects in 2075 seeking out what will then be vintage originals at exorbitant prices, some saavy manufacturer eventually getting the licensing rights and the coolest websites spreading the excitement about the rerelease.

This is the Relax version of the Fjord lounge chair, half of which has a high back to lean against.
Fjord Relax Chair
The chair comes in a range of colors and fabrics, and the swivel's square base and pole are powder coated to match the upholstery.
This image and the one that follows show how different the Relax Fjord chair looks when viewed from different angles.
The chair's unique shape should prevent you from piling on clean laundry or stacks of magazines when you use it as an occasional chair in the bedroom.
If space is tight in a family room, a den or a bedroom, the smaller armchair is a great occasional-chair option.
Fjord High Bar Stool
I hate when my legs just dangle from a bar stool. In addition to the bum-hugging tractor seat, the Fjord stool offers a bar that keeps feet from falling asleep.
The bar stool version has a very simple, contemporary shape; Urquiola's signature is the telltale notch.
Finally, these poufs are called Fjord Stones. They come in three sizes to serve as seats, footrests or coffee tables.
