Define Design: Modern Northwest Style
Northwesterners Go for Warmth, Wood — and All the Light They Can Get
The definition of today's Northwest style is a simple one: clean-lines, light, natural materials, and neutral tones combined with bright colors. What makes the Northwest different than other parts of the country is our love affair with natural materials — usually the more the merrier. And, while we love our traditional styles, there is a growing movement to incorporate more contemporary stylings into our homes. Here the 7 building blocks of today's Northwest style.
1. Light. This wall of windows servers two purposes: to let light in during the darker winter months and to open the space up to the view outside. We love our views and want to capture all the sun we can get.
2. Warmth. The cream tones in the stone and cabinetry make for an inviting master retreat. Even if logistically we're not able to open up a space to the outside, keeping the colors and materials in the warmer tones helps brighten an interior.
3. Bold color. Yes, colors this bold are not for everyone. However, homeowners are more and more willing to try something bold. This modern loft is anchored by the fireplace wall's bold orange tones and cool concrete grays. The creamy leather sofa and ottomans, and wood-trimmed windows add needed softness and warmth.
The deep and rich tones of this retreat on the Oregon coast are another example of our love of color. Deep reds and other earth tones, combined with a beautiful wood ceiling create a warm and inviting space.
4. A respect for the past. Much like other parts of the country, there is a sizable movement in the Northwest to maintain and treasure styles from eras past. What I can appreciate is the willingness to incorporate a touch of the unexpected. In this Craftsman home, modern furniture, traditional casework and a touch of whimsy in the deer head are all expertly combined into one lovely Northwestern interior.
5. Creative use of materials. This dining room wall is made of concrete, but with a wood pattern pressed into it. The mix of concrete, vintage style ceiling and modern Panton chairs makes for an eclectic combination.
6. Simple lines, high design. Working off a core tenant of Northwest style, this formal dining room is all clean lines layered with texture, pattern and subtle colors. The combination of Asian and modern adds another layer of complexity without being fussy.
7. Coffee! The U.S. gourmet coffee movement started here in the Northwest, and we still love a good cup of joe or an espresso. This area of the kitchen was designed to be a little espresso center. With a built-in shelf for cups and saucers and a espresso machine, these home owners are set.
