Great Design Plant: Evergreen Pear
THEME INTRO As a small tree, its pure white flowers can brighten up a patio orgarden in dark winter days. In spring and summer its glossy foliage offers shade. Easy to grow. Needs pruning to make it into patio tree. Start with single trunk tree.
PROFILE INTRO It’s a true pear, but you don’t grow it for fruit but for the winter-spring white flowers – often the only thing blooming heavily at the time of year in may parts of California. It’s a nice evergreen tree (decid on colder climates) and xxxxxxx. Versatile espalier, takes pruing but cuts off flowers.

Distinguishing traits: In mild climates (such as California), abundant white blossoms come really early in the year – a hint of spring even in January. Foliage is mostly evergreen, deciduous in colder climates. How to use it: Easily trained (with pruning and staking) into a small patio tree or even a full-sized street tree. Very trainable, it can be pruned into an espalier on a blank wall or fence. Before you plant it: Shop for plants already trained for your situation: as a single or multiple trunk tree.
