The Not So Big Space
Little is the new big. While I enjoy checking out sweeping vistas and expansive palaces as much as the next person, the truth is that most of us actually live in fairly small spaces – and that’s all we really need.
In the 10 years since architect Sarah Susanka published her ode to small-scale living, The Not So Big House, a lot of big houses have been built, but a lot of homeowners have also chosen to downsize, and many renovators have taken steps to make their home more livable, instead of just larger.

Kitchen size is a big complaint of many owners of older homes and apartment dwellers - but it doesn't have to be. Sure, a galley kitchen will never offer as much storage as a 500 square foot McMansion pantry, but smart, user-focused design can make the smallest kitchen efficient and beautiful. I love the wood and stainless here, and I know it would be simple to prep food just between the sink and stove, while guests hang out at the table and chat.
I love the use of windows to open up what could become a claustrophobic stairway. A simple walkway, tree and planter bring the outside in, complementing the natural wood of the steps.
