Stone Walls
As a kid, I grew up in Ohio, with visits to my grandparents' house in Connecticut. One of the many things that stood out about this exotic-to-me place was the beautiful stone walls that seemed to go on forever. Perhaps that's how I grew up to be such an Andy Goldsworthy fan. I'm just a sucker for a beautiful stone wall. Whether it's an historic home in Bucks County PA, a prairie school home in the midwest, a cabin in Wyoming or a contemporary home in California, using this natural material ties the home to its surroundings in a beautiful way.

I'm rather obsessed with this Connecticut lake house lately. Historically, foundations were made of local stone, and here the stone foundation and first floor is a great transition between the natural surroundings and the building.
Here the rough stones are arranged to give rectilinear definition to the yard.
This stone wall comes to an end with flair.
Stone walls add high drama and scads of texture indoors.
They aren't just limited to fireplaces either.
The stone in The Radius House is part of the interplay between indoors and out.
This is a renovation in Croatia, where clearly old-world craftsman were experts at building with stone.
