Ideabook 911: HELP! The Front of My House is Naked!
My friends Wicki and Alex just put on a three-story addition in the back of their house. This meant they got a fancy new paint job and new gutters. Unfortunately, it also meant that when the thousand year storm occured during construction, water started pouring into their new basement study (actually, it was quite timely, better to know sooner and fix the problem before there stuff had been moved back in there). Thus, they had to dig up all of their shrubs in the front and install a French drain. The shrubs didn't make it. Neither did the herb garden. They already have a wonderful vegetable garden in the back that feeds them all summer. Otherwise, I might have had them do a big kitchen garden that would take up the entire front yard.
What you're not seeing in this picture is the driveway on the right and the property line on the left. The concrete in the front is the existing public sidewalk. Ironically, the day I took this, HGTV's "Curb Appeal" was filming around the corner. I suppose we should have lured them over for cocktails and milked them for free advice! But instead, here are some inspiring images packed with some lovely front yard and facade ideas.

First and foremost, get Alex to stop cutting down that azalea on the right side of the stairs. Let it grow wild!
