OK, here is the skinny, from my point of view:
Refrigerators: All are cold, and except for the flush look that SZ pioneered, not a lot of difference in performance.
Dishwashers. Once you get above $500 or so, most seem to wash well, with the correct detergent (tehe best detergent for you may be different than the best one for me, because of different water). $500-800 buys SS tubs, more insulation, more cycles. Above $800, you get very little improvements. The only unique dishwashers on the market are the DD's.
Microwave. Little difference beyond size.
Disposal-Get 3/4 or more HP, all stainless construction, and you are good to go.
Ovens (seperate): Combi ovens (those with steam) can make a difference in the food-but they are costly adn somewhat complex.
Ranges. Now, here, in the hands of an enthusiast, you can get a difference. A Bluestar, DCS or Wolf can out-cook a pedestrian range. I am a pretty good vook. Yes, I can cook well on a builder-grade coil-top range, but my food is better from my Bluestar. But this does not apply to all 'high-end' ranges-What you are looking for is maximum BTU's, and the higher the better. If's it's a 'high-end' range and does not feature a burner over 15,000 BTU, you are paying for the looks.
So, my advice is this. If you have a tight budget, skrimp on the fridge and DW, and splurge on the range. You food will thank you for it.
