beachhouse garage
We are in the active stages of beginning the process of creating an attractive, creative, even fun and ultimately, an organized garage. It involves careful planning in limited space; it also means being specific about how we want things to be laid out. We need to be sure of measurements of the space we have to work with, any “givens” that we want to use in a certain spot including the length and width of my little convertible beach-run-around car, and a medium sized ‘fridge, that I happen to already know will fit one way or another. We have to then can work with, to scale when Amy has measured here, on paper and on computer, the dimensions of the space to work with, and in general arrange and play with the various design elements we have seen, own, or would like to own, measuring them all and being mindful of where electrical outlets already exist at present. To experiment in “real life”. Height may or may not also matter, a question for our contractor.
There are most likely going to be a minimum of 2 bicycles, either hanging from the ceiling and if not, along one of the 2 long sides of the interior, on a bike stand which could hold 2 and is more accessible. We will discuss it all w/ our builder and my guys(family). It requires involving everyone in our family as each is wanting to move some things that may impact otherspace and ideas. There are categories to layout so we can start with placing, trying out areas for separate spaces online.
Our garage is level w/ the ground, always at risk of a flood as we all know who simply love being near Mother ocean.
~ I also know that we have one of our 2 length-wise walls is of brick, (part of the house, now in this moderate 1940’s garage)
~ I also have seen how much real wood is in there, making it possible to do a lot more with the walls as support for shelving, storage, hooks, etc.
We are collecting ideas from Houzz, friends’ and neighbors’ garages, magazines, catalogs, etc.for all of this. We do know a few things we want/don’t want already, and would like to combine the overall space using several different yet cohesive features while also providing the storage and space we need.
~(a side note, I read this below, and like it as one possible item if there is room, so wanted to copy/paste what this gal wrote on her blog, ( i<3 organizing"): THIS is such a cool idea!!!
“a constantly clear work surface is essential. We have a work table on locking casters (a curbside trash find) and an agreement that that surface always be empty. It makes a big difference to always have a place to fold clean laundry, sort recycling, or even lay out all the small pieces of a project. Casters mean that it glides around the space to be right where we need it to be. “
More later, so for now, also see my “Pininterest” on the same subject if photos are not transferred as of yet.
~~For sure, we do know the following about the garage.
1) we need to clear everything out as well as have the measurements done to scale and on computer software since it works so well
2)collaborate on what our priorities are and what is actually possible to do~ brainstorm ways to get it all in and organized well!
3) some needs already established are:
~some shelving, undetermined how much now ,but do need to take first remove the old ones
~new pegboard, the old has to go. Could paint it as in some of the photos here on site
~ space for storing tools, and tool boxes, for gardening tools and gear as well ; 2 bikes at least, hang from above, or on a stand, which is easier ; 3 surfboards to hang along wall; a small space possibly as an open worktop area; a long-hang space for long wall like rakes and brooms; an area for storing any boat items that may be stored here rather than at the docks, including sails and NOT a dinghy (sorry to Jim!); a few trash can type medium sized tins for containing garden soil, birdseed, and a place to put them (maybe underneath the open work shelf?); create a ground-level space for the given 3 plastic recycling bins we use weekly, placed long-ways, near the door to enter the house for convenience sake OR it may need to be near the garage door end for convenience in placing them outside for pick up, and just put some form of small container to inable us to quickly toss recycling near the inside door to sort later??; a bench near the door to house, for “dog walking items’ including our shoes! , and it also gives us a place to sit; space for odds and ends that need to go for restoration, like lamp shop or small furniture, like an open shelf space ; the very necessary old ‘fridge; and ,my car.
~in-put from husband and contractor about other needs in garage??
Wish us all luck!?!
This is what is my line of thinking for a small section of peg board combined with a work surface, plus storage beneath I am beginning to appreciate peg board more and more; also good job on keeping everything neutral in surrounds, with tools and such bringing in the color.( ~~I doubt I want a mower under the work bench though, unless it was not a gas one! It doesn't let me pull in a chair or stool for working, and the fumes, not great, just a thought for self note!)
This photo shows a similar layout w/ door at back, of our garage; we also have 1 small window, and room for 1 car; lateral storage that does not stand out more than a set distance as it should be on wall that will be closest to car space or vice versa- ~~park next to cabinet section, shelving, since it is smoother to be next to;do not like a system for hanging, rather hooks into wood we put up for a more natural effect, shelves, and additional re-purposed wood.
The lights and natural look of using wood are so nice; we do not want all the low lying cubbies, with plastic containers, only need a few for recycling...and the dog is adorable!~ great garage, it inspired me to want to use some of the natural wood and perhaps lighting that is not too $$ but adds ambiance.
hooks into walls without having to buy an entire system for them; hanging space galore- **our garage DOES have wooden cross pieces on the walls as part of the construction, ***SO we could hang and attach shelving, hooks, units etc. Notice the old 'fridge! Again grey painted floor, we need to determine if ours' needs a fresh coat or 2.
Here is efficiency, there are several close ups as well as this photo for a garden corner in a garage; ***Ikea products, like clips for vertical tool storage, like shelves and small fold-out potting table as an option, rather than a flat space within a unit, or the idea of a piece of furniture since I like most gardening things stored like this; it is a dream, but I do work outdoors on potting and it should be organized.
I like hanging tools on walls, and we need 3 surfboards on hooks(like in a local surf shop) hanging from the sides, rather than above as recommended by a local shop, and possibly 2-3 bikes; I have seen a stand for bicycles?? Or also may need to be hanging from ceiling. ** a stand is more easily accessed if there is room for one holding 2 bikes.
Part of our space could use use some of this style in the overall design: I am not sure what is more rust-resistant while it keeps critters out and some special items inside. Stainless(?) cabinets, nice, it blends with grey painted peg board , and notice the open shelves along with some w/ doors;I also see something w/ wheels hanging on the left edge.
