Coffered Ceiling
Sturdy does it, with beams and panels that evoke old-world artisanship and charm
A coffered ceiling has boxlike recessed areas between beams. Originally devised as a way to lighten the load of heavy stone ceilings in Greek and Roman architecture, coffered ceilings are now an ornamentation to give the appearance of coffering. Constructed with real or faux beams, trimmed out with moldings and painted, they can be very formal and detailed.
The coffered ceiling of this white kitchen has recessed lights in the sunken panels between the beams.
The painted beams of this contemporary living room give an appearance of a coffered ceiling.
Natural knotty wood with a nice, glossy sheen and tongue and groove planks make a rustic home office stately and grand.
Dark stained beadboard panels and white painted beams create the coffered ceiling in this traditional kitchen.
