A Blue and Gold Banquet
Blue and gold are a classic combo. They're a no-brainer. But why? You as an intelligent reader and designer (amateur or pro) know that the colors reside on opposite sides of the color wheel and are therefore contrasting colors that complement each other well. (And whether a room is vibrant or calm depends on the ratio of the two colors.) Shift to the purple side of blue, and the contrast reaches into the yellow and even green-ish shades; shift to the turquoise side of blue and the contrast becomes orange and firey.
Though there is one regal and classic example of blue and gold here, this ideabook highlights some examples of how blue and gold can be interpreted in several different ways and design styles. From the chic to the hip, blue and gold are infused with new life.
In this very traditional and regal living room, blue and navy are mingled with red, and accented with variations of the palate. The striped gold wallpaper draws attention to the mirrors, chandelier, and curtain hardware while also providing a bright background to the heavier colors and shapes throughout the room.
This very European bathroom is dramatic in its contrast of black, white, and gold--but I like to imagine what it would look like with dark marine-navy walls and tub, and a natural wood floor, with the gold accenting. Maybe much more of the same kind of art on the wall? When covering such a large area with such dark paint, I was recently reminded by a photo in a back copy of Architectural Digest, how high gloss helps attract light and keep the dark from being too dark.
Another view of the same light and happy space. This room is complete and beautiful, but would be very interesting with golds contrasting the blue and drawing on the hints of gold in the wood floor, the rug, and even some of the striped lounge chair fabric in the background.
