How To Upload from URL and Link to Ideabook within a post
This is a small Ideabook to show how to do a few things on Houzz.
First, let’s look at how to add an image and link to Houzz from an external website such as Amazon.com.
The first step is to click the “Add Photo or File” button within the Ideabook. Select “Add a photo from website”.
Then visit the site where you see the image that you want. Copy the page URL and paste it. It will say how many images you can select. You must choose one and then add a description. You can either type or just copy and paste the description from the webpage.
Now, sometimes when you visit a webpage, you will see that under the image it says “roll over image to zoom in”. In this case, the image is sometimes not available on the page. When you mouseover the image it opens a Flash applet that zooms in. If you paste the URL for the item in to the bar when adding a photo from website, it will often say that there are 0 (zero) images to select. In this case, Houzz will not let you link directly to the page. Now, there is a work-around for this.
Often on Amazon, if you mouseover the image it gives you an option to also click on the image and it will pop up a window to see a zoomed view. Most of the time this will allow you to rightclick on the image and either save it to your computer or copy the URL. You can do both if you wish.
So, in this case, instead of selecting “Add a photo from website” you would select “Upload a file or photo”. Now, if you downloaded the file to your computer, you can select it and upload it. If you don’t want to have a copy of the file on your computer or can’t remember where you put it, you can copy the URL of the image (as described above) and then paste it in to the bar next to “Filename:”. This will allow you to upload the image from the external site instead of from your computer. (Thank you to George Takei for that tip). Upload the image and then copy the URL of the page from which you found it (NOT the direct link to the image) so that you (and visitors to your Ideabook) can find their way back to the source.
The benefit of adding an image to your Ideabook is that you can attach images into a post without having to upload the image as an attachment AND the link to the item in the Ideabook can be put in the middle of the post instead of having to be at the end.
Note: When you are creating a post and you paste the URL of an item from an Ideabook (basically you click on the item in an Ideabook so it pops up a screen to show a larger version and description and you can copy the URL at the top), the full URL will show. Once you click Submit, the URL will then be changed to the title of the linked Ideabook.
When attaching an image to a post (when said image is not in an Ideabook), you can either upload it directly from your computer, or you can use the URL in Filename box to upload it.
