Gabion Wall
A wire cage filled with rock makes for a free-form wall solution

A gabion is a wall constructed of galvanized steel baskets filled with rock. Flexible in its size and appearance, it withstands pressure without cracking, conforms to ground movement, drains freely and can be shaped, tapered, curved or terraced.
Cages of different heights and some custom woodwork make this gabion a feature in the garden.
This gabion wall has a water fountain embedded in the river rock.
Gabions can be filled with any type of rock and work well for climbing plants.
A gabion wall like this very tall example will not crack and can be installed to match the grade of the ground.

The area I am referring to is on the north east shore of Lake Ontario. We were blessed with Italian immigrant masons of exteamly high skill and vast areas of lime stone on the shores of the lake and on Chaumont Bay. Examples of the limestone houses, bridges, breakwaters and retaining walls still exist in beautiful condition.
Ranchers in Oklahoma use these to stabilize corner posts out in the country. I think this is a very clever use of simple, available materials. They are not particularly beautiful in the examples that you show but perhaps they could be prettier ?
