A Touch of Chinoiserie
What is Chinoiserie? Chinoiserie, a French term, signifying "Chinese-esque", refers to a recurring theme in European artistic styles since the seventeenth century, which reflect Chinese artistic influences. It is characterized by the use of fanciful imagery of an imaginary China, by asymmetry in format and whimsical contrasts of scale, and by the attempts to imitate Chinese porcelain and the use of lacquer like materials and decoration.
Using a touch of Chinoiserie has been around for centuries. I am a huge fan of using just a touch of it in most any space. There are many options to add the Chinoiserie feel to a space. You are not limited to fabrics or porcelain touches. The selections of furniture, accessories, antiques, and wallpapers are amazing right now. You can use it in a modern space by utilizing a great antique piece such as a cabinet or an interesting sculptural piece. Make a neutral space in traditional home "pop" by using a cluster of blue and white urns, vases, and cache pots on a mahogany table. By keeping it simple and not over doing the whole Chinoiserie theme, you can have a look right out of your favorite magazine.
