Guest Picks: Snowy, Starry Winter Decor
Let winter's magic reach every room with accessories, furnishings and fixtures done up in nighttime blue and snowdrift white
I’m trying to embrace winter this year, which is no easy task for a native Californian, to be sure. But because this is my fifth winter in New England, I’d say it’s about time to roll with it. The interior I’m envisioning is magical and filled with light, star motifs, inky night-sky blues and snowy whites. It’s a place for resting, relaxing and dreaming while the snow falls outside. I hope you enjoy these 20 finds as much as I enjoyed collecting them! — Laura from Lolalina
Wendy Polish for Chay Constellation Tea Towel
I fell for this star-bedecked tea towel in the current issue of Domino magazine (yes, it’s really back), and tracked it down. It’s pure linen, so it will last forever.
Z1 Cotton Lamp
This supersize pendant light from Bodie and Fou isn’t quite like anything I’ve ever seen. Sort of like a modern, artistic interpretation of a Japanese lantern, this light will make the room.
Organic Entrée Plate, Porcelain by Urban Cartel
Aren’t these plates gorgeous? They’re hand tinted in lovely cloud-like hues by Aussie ceramics shop Urban Cartel. A stack of them would look just right sitting on open shelving in the kitchen.
Vintage Map of the Universe on Metal by Art-House Graffiti
This steel map of the universe was created using a vintage illustration. The panel is a generous 4 feet by 2 feet and would make a stunning focal point in an otherwise bare hallway.
Bell Lamp, Sand, Small
The smooth lines and organic form of the Bell light from Normann Copenhagen make it the perfect complement to a soothing interior. I would love to hang one over a dining table or in breakfast nook.
Candleholder, Indigo
Sometimes the simplest things are best — take this candleholder from Heath Ceramics, for instance. It’s stackable, so you can change the look depending on how many you get, and it can fit both tapers and tea lights, depending on which side is facing up. Get a bunch to cluster and stack — you can never have too many candles in the wintertime.
Constellation Matches
Speaking of candles, you’ll need something to light them with, right? You may as well make it something chic, like this box of long matches from Catbird that features a constellation of stars.
Bird Constellation Photographic Print by Blue Algae Creative
This dreamy bird photograph from Blue Algae Creative has been superimposed with a star constellation to lovely effect. It is printed on textured matte paper, a detail that makes all the difference in how the print will look on your wall.
Tamar Mogendorff Night Woods Standing Fox
Decidedly not a toy, this handmade fox sculpture from artist Tamar Mogendorff would love to take up residence on your desk. Mogendorff’s work reminds me of fairy tales and the magic of childhood, things I think we could all use a reminder of in our tech-heavy lives.
Pouf Crochet, Ecru by La Casa de Cotó
This soft, squashy crocheted pouf reminds me of a giant snowball. It’s the perfect size for propping up your feet, but it would also make a nice perch for a small child. Put one in front of the fireplace, and you can fight over who gets to use it.
Luxurious Supersoft Fur Hot Water Bottle, Snow Fox
What could possibly be more comforting in winter than a hot-water bottle, wrapped in luxurious faux fur? I think the answer is: nothing.
Poetic License Candle, Silently Across the Snow
Are you ever tempted to buy candles based on the name alone? Just reading the words “Silently Across the Snow” was enough to make me want this candle from Lollia. Even though I haven’t had the opportunity to sniff this particular one, Lollia has never disappointed before, so I’d be willing to give it a go.
Birch Stars and Pinecones Garland
I love wintry decorations that aren’t too holiday specific, like this pinecone and birch star garland. I would drape it around the mantel and leave it up for months.
Shimmery Crescent Moon Ornament
Speaking of decorations to leave up, I would be tempted to skip the tree and hang this glittering silver moon ornament from an interior doorknob instead — you know, somewhere where I could “forget” to take it down after the holidays and continue to secretly admire it.
Marble Oval Coffee Table
Marble and antiqued brass are a match made in heaven, and this table would look fantastic alongside any of the night-sky blue and glittering-star silver picks in this ideabook.
Blu Dot Lily Pad Coffee Table
The three round surfaces of this unique coffee table from Blu Dot remind me of planets in orbit. It looks superexpensive, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it costs less than $400.
Star, Wooden Beads
You can hang this simple wooden star decoration from Bodie and Fou just about anywhere: on the front of a wardrobe, on a wreath, on the wall, in a child’s room. It might look particularly splendid hung on a chalkboard wall, don’t you think?
Pitcher
This snow-white stoneware pitcher from Billy Cotton looks like a modern riff on an amphora from the ancient world. And it’s quite a bargain at under $40.
Canvas Laundry Cart, Indigo
You need a place in which to toss your dirty jeans, so why not make it this ultrapigmented indigo hamper from Old Faithful Shop? Its steel frame will last forever, and the deep color means dirt won’t show.
Trees Pillow Cover
The simple tree illustrations on this pillow are so charming. It would be adorable in a nursery or in an older child’s bedroom, but it would be equally at home on the living room sofa, too.
