Diva Bedrooms Grab the Spotlight
Be your own superstar in a showstopping bedroom designed for rest, rejuvenation and a whole lot of drama
“Diva” refers to a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, theater, cinema or popular music. She also tends to have impressive style. In addition, she is probably exhausted and needs just the right bedroom perfect for recharging.
However, a diva’s bedroom is not put together on a whim: This is a thought-out space that reflects her keen eye for panache. Now I’m just a humble writer from Chicago — the closest I’ve gotten to divadom is singing along with a Beyoncé track — but I have some ideas for how these high-powered women might go about decorating a bedroom. One thing is for sure: The space will entertain.

The diva isn’t interested in the ordinary. She wants a bedroom that makes a statement as loud and clear as she does herself. Her eye is honed for unusual finds, like a fabulous antique headboard and a classic Louis chair stamped with a face and splashed in lime green. An eclectic space gets her creative juices flowing.
Creating an impact is second nature to the diva. A room almost entirely in hot pink? The diva does not hesitate to approve a bold color scheme. In fact, why would she stop at the walls? The diva never goes halfway — she ensures that the ceiling is in on the act, too.
A diva knows that a room in all black exudes edgy drama, so you'd better believe she is all for it.
The diva knows the talents and ways of the past can teach her multitudes, so she is no stranger to antiques. She mixes them in accordingly, proud of her one-of-a-kind finds.
The diva travels all over the world, so she is not about to have a bedroom without an incredible view. If she's a superdiva, she likely has several of these bedrooms with a view in all sorts of spectacular places.
Above all else, the diva knows her trends, and her bedroom reflects that knowledge. The diva knows that 2012 calls for large mirrors, so she takes it to the next level with a mirror that covers the entire wall.
The diva knows that mixing patterns is all the rage, so she includes everything from geometrics to prints. She’s not afraid of too many patterns in one room; she knows how to work it.
The diva ensures that her space includes a mix of materials, from velvet to silk. And not small doses of these materials — she wants entire walls in velvet, of course.
By now we know that the walls of a diva’s bedroom are rarely off trend or, heaven forbid, boring. When a diva chooses wallpaper, she makes sure it has a nature theme, a hot-ticket look for 2012.
In terms of color, the diva may go a few different ways. One is the trendy metallic palette —sometimes a diva just wants her bedroom to reflect her jewelry collection.
Or she may go for other current popular colors, such as coral, turquoise and yellow. Don’t think she picks up on the trends directly from design blogs; she’s getting this info from her assistant’s junior assistant’s intern, who is reading those blogs.
Of course, the diva always knows how to incorporate trends in a sophisticated fashion. The feathers we’ve been seeing everywhere? The diva sneaks them in via a chic piece of art. Let’s face it, the diva is always one step ahead.
