Add a Little Gothic Glamour, Chateau Marmont Style
Vintage-Chic Styling Ideas Inspired by Sophia Coppola's "Somewhere"
Los Angeles' Chateau Marmont is a legend. From Robert Mitchum to John Belushi to Brittany Spears, the Chateau Marmont has been the place for celebrities to hang out (and act out) for generations. Now, the Chateau is itself the star of a film from Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola. The film "Somewhere" delves into the life of Johnny Marco and his celebrity lifestyle while living at the Chateau.
The castle, perched on a hill above Sunset Boulevard, is considered to be Hollywood's playground and at times its sanctuary — Lauren Hutton on the balcony, Bogie in the garden and even Lindsay Lohan in the suites. While the celebrity stories are robust, the hotel claims that the tales never leave via their staff.
The faux Gothic styled Chateau is seven stories tall. It has been refurbished by the current owner to its older vintage chic styling and is delightfully mismatched in its interior. It is a style the owner calls "gothic glamour," which apparently never goes out of style. In fact, it is considered to be perfect imperfection. With a beamed ceiling, gothic arches, a fabulous pool and a bit of damask and velvet, this look — at least part of it — could be yours too.

Gothic shapes with contemporary lighting and time-worn patina like this would be at home at the Chateau.
The Marmont's Salon has Gothic windows similar to the styling in this design. The shape and dimensions are timelessly appropriate and in proportion to the lofty beamed ceilings at the Marmont.
The Marmont's public areas are purposely moody and dark, much like this room. The bar area holds various textures and dim lighting from Forties-style light fixtures — a perfect backdrop to remain anonymous while reviewing a script!
The hotel rooms at the Chateau are light and bright like this room. At the hotel, each room looks out to a garden view.
Damask wallpapers can be found in public areas of the Marmont.
Hollywood styled furnishings capture the hotel's stylish ambiance.
Display black and white photos at home for Hollywood style. Photos line the hotel's Thirties-style lobby phone booths and serve as a reminder of the hotel's legendary history.
The outdoor walking areas of the Chateau Marmont have terracotta pavers, fountains and greenery like this.
These windows are very much like those of the Chateau's Hillside Bungalows.
Poolside bungalows at the Marmont have two or three bedrooms. Lots of light and wicker furnishings give the space its life. Each bungalow also has a private entrance and patio with direct access to the pool.
The neutral tones and swivel chairs in this scene have a similar feel to the Chateau's 1,200-square-foot One Bedroom Penthouse Suite. At the hotel, the suite includes a king-size bed, large living room with hardwood floor, formal dining room, full kitchen and two patio private terraces — certainly enough to make you want to put out the "do not disturb" sign.
This triped awning and views of this design is very similar to the look of the terrace area in Two Bedroom Penthouse Suite at the Chateau.
This landscape design's garden arches and pathways remind me of the Chateau's Garden Cottages, which are grouped around a courtyard adjacent to the pool.
Part of the hotel's features and amenities include a heated outdoor pool surrounded by gardens and a large sun patio similar to this design.
