4. Uncommon Cottage
House at a Glance
Who lives here: Designer Ginger Curtis, founder of Urbanology Designs, and her family
Location: Weatherford, Texas
Size: 2,000 square feet (186 square meters); three bedrooms, two bathrooms
When renovating this 1922 cottage for use as a getaway for her family as well as a short-term rental, designer Ginger Curtis preserved original architectural details but also took design risks. For example, she mixed contemporary, retro and traditional furnishings; installed boldly patterned wallpaper; and chose dark, moody colors like navy for some of the walls and deep purple for the kitchen cabinetry. This bedroom, which has a curtained bed niche complete with bookshelves, is characteristic of the home’s new sophisticated-but-playful, vintage-meets-modern style.

2. Cool Ranch
House at a Glance
Who lives here: Interior designer Joni Spear and her husband, Dan
Location: St. Louis
Size: 1,808 square feet (168 square meters); four bedrooms, three bathrooms
A renovation enabled designer Joni Spear to expand the primary bedroom, bathroom and kitchen in her 1950s ranch house. Meanwhile, an inspiring trip to the English countryside and a collection of salvaged and antique finds helped her fill the humdrum house and its addition with character. The new kitchen, for example, has Calacatta Vagli marble countertops with prominent British racing green veins, coordinating green cabinetry (including a tall reclaimed cabinet) and refinished Spanish Revival pendant lights salvaged from a local German restaurant. The green continues into the adjacent family room, which has an English pub vibe and black-and-white marble tile flooring in a harlequin pattern.

1. Farmhouse Refresh
House at a Glance
Who lives here: This was the home of designer Lex Brooks, husband Stu, their infant daughter and their dog
Location: Atlanta
Size: 2,000 square feet (186 square meters); three bedrooms, three bathrooms
Designers: Lex Brooks of The Brooks & Studio (interior design) and Bryan Jones of Jones Pierce Studios (architecture)
Contractor: Jeff Dinkle of Eco Custom Homes
Brooks and her husband, Stu, breathed new life into this 1910 farmhouse, preserving charming historical elements like the porch and original flooring, which she had refinished. But she gutted, reconfigured and expanded spaces as needed to make the house functional for their young family. That included adding this great room as part of an addition on the back of the house. It features a high vaulted ceiling with oak beams, a new gas fireplace and sliding double doors that open to the backyard. On the right of the photo, you can just barely see the new 5-by-10-foot island that anchors the new entertaining-friendly kitchen and serves as the hub of the home.

5. Duplex Do-Over
House at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia
Size: 1,250 square feet (116 square meters); two bedrooms, 1½ bathrooms
Designer: Top Shelf Design
Reconfiguring this compact and clean-lined Canadian home, which occupies the back half of a duplex, put designers Sarah Gallop and Jamie Judd’s space-planning skills to the test. Removing a block containing a powder room, coat closet and utilities that hogged the middle of the first floor allowed them to create this great room, which has easy flow to the backyard and a dining room made possible by a banquette built into the kitchen island. Other smart updates included carving out an entryway and creating more space for storage and a Murphy bed in upstairs bedrooms.
