New This Week: 10 Laundry Rooms Full of Fresh Ideas
See how design and remodeling pros create well-equipped laundry spaces that can brighten your day (not just your whites)
Ideally, a laundry room has a washer and dryer, storage and a countertop for folding clothes. When space permits, a sink and a place to air-dry delicates are nice-to-have features too. But whatever their size, the best laundry rooms have durable finishes and thoughtful design details that make them as beautiful as they are functional. Here, pros share the special features they used in 10 new laundry rooms on Houzz.
2. Black Beauty
Designer-builder: Samantha Grose of Oak & Arrow Homes
Location: Edina, Minnesota
Size: 237½ square feet (22 square meters); 12½ by 19 feet
Homeowners’ request. Previously, this space was divided into an awkward office and a congested laundry and mudroom. While it checked a lot of boxes, the owners wanted and needed it to function better. “We opened up the space so they could move around easily, and [we] were smart about each built-in we designed and where we added storage so the new room fits their needs perfectly,” says designer Samantha Grose, whose clients used Houzz ideabooks to collect and share inspirational photos.
Special features. Grose stacked a black washer and dryer and selected black for the surrounding cabinetry, countertop and hardware, creating a moody color scheme she says is popular for transitional spaces like this one. “We did a wall of custom cabinetry specifically for sports gear,” she says. “They wanted a spot for things to dry after going through the wash, so we made a cabinet with a metal screen door detail and rollout screen trays for the gear to be laid out on. Everything can be neatly tucked away while drying.”
Designer tip. “Customize whenever you can,” Grose says. “It doesn’t necessarily cost all that much more to add outlets exactly where you want them or extra hooks for baseball hats. Tailoring a space to how you will use it is something you won’t regret.”

3. Under the Sea
Designer: Elizabeth Medina Ross of CAME Designs
Location: Boca Raton, Florida
Size: 60 square feet (5.6 square meters); 6 by 10 feet
Homeowner’s request. Designer Elizabeth Medina Ross’ client loves the color blue and doing laundry, which he finds relaxing. He wanted a blue laundry room that made him feel like he was surrounded by ocean. “We wanted to make this room one he loved going in to use often,” the designer says. “The laundry is a space that only the homeowner will use, but it should still be organized and beautiful!”
Special features. Navy blue cabinets, blue-veined tiles and blue side-by-side front-loading washer and dryer satisfied the color request. The tiles’ swirly pattern evokes waves, and their large format helps keep the room from feeling boxed in with all that blue. The black quartz countertop, gold-tone faucet and brass handles add a bit of contrast. The countertop and its nonslip sueded finish are helpful for folding.
Designer tip. A “sink is the perfect spot to wash small dogs too, out of the way of the rest of the home,” Medina Ross says.

4. Fresh and Natural
Designer: Lizzie Green of Popix Designs
Builder: Rocco Borgese of Borgese Construction
Location: Santa Monica, California
Size: About 35 square feet (3.3 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. This small laundry room used to be dark, and the homeowner wanted it to feel light and bright to match the rest of the home. Designer Lizzie Green added a door with a window to bring in more natural light and used pale natural materials to give the room an organic modern style.
Special features. The designer paired white oak cabinets with concrete-colored countertops. Hand-cut zellige tiles are laid in a diamond pattern on the backsplash, and the floor tiles have a subtle pattern that ties in with the white backsplash.
Rather than match the pricey unlacquered brass fixtures throughout the rest of the house, which felt like too much of a splurge, Green opted for a matte black faucet to match the black stacking washer and dryer. The clients were initially hesitant, but Green says the black works well and adds pleasing contrast to the light finishes.
The custom white oak cabinets by Popix Designs have a custom cutout trim detail at the top and oversize integrated curved cabinet pulls, which Green says gives them a wow factor. “[The cabinets] bring this space to life while not feeling too precious,” she says.
Designer tip. “If it’s a small laundry room, I usually suggest using stacking washers and dryers so you can also fit a sink into the design,” Green says. “It’s nice to have a place to let things soak, or an extra utility sink for when things get messy.”

5. Clean and Bright
Designers: Kendall Chapman and Ashley Turner of HDR Remodeling
Builder: HDR Remodeling
Location: Berkeley, California
Homeowners’ request. “Just color, color, color,” designer Kendall Chapman says. The homeowner was drawn to midcentury modern bright colors and wanted the space to feel cleaner and brighter. “People shouldn’t feel like they have to limit themselves to a neutral palette in order to achieve a ‘clean look,’ ” Chapman says.
Special features. The homeowners found the glossy ceramic orange subway tile, and the designers used it on the backsplash, ensuring that the clean-edged tiles were perfectly aligned. Midcentury-style knobs on the cabinetry have a chrome finish that matches the faucet and hanging rod. The colorful rug ties together the orange and the stacked red washer and dryer.
A wall-mounted drying rack folds into the opposite wall and drops down when needed. And since the space doubles as the cat’s room, the space under the counter was designed with a litter box in mind.
Designer tip. Chapman also recommends including a sink, specifically an extra-deep utility sink with a pull-down faucet, like the one she installed here so the client could hand-wash items. “I think if I had a laundry room, that’s exactly what I would want as well,” she says.

6. Storybook Character
Designer: Rhonda Everts of
R. Everts Interiors
Builder: Martin Deane of
Kells Construction
Location: Wellesley, Massachusetts
Size: 56 square feet (5.2 square meters); 7 by 8 feet
Homeowners’ request. The laundry room in this 1920s Storybook-style home was originally downstairs. Designer Rhonda Everts was a friend of the homeowner, so she knew her taste and lifestyle well — and knew she liked cheerful color and pattern, which fills the rest of the home. They relocated the laundry room upstairs to what had been a small bedroom to improve its accessibility.
Special features. A stacked washer and dryer left room for plenty of upper and lower cabinets and an expansive Danby marble countertop. An open lower cabinet is perfectly sized for a woven hamper. An undermount sink adds more functionality. Above, a light fixture echoes the floor tile’s geometric pattern.
The blue-and-white floor tile coordinates with the blue cabinets (Blue Veil by Benjamin Moore), playful John Robshaw wallpaper and cafe curtain in Cowtan & Tout fabric. “When using bold patterns, it’s important to have some quieter moments as well,” Everts says. “Here, the cabinets in the soft blue give a nice break between the pattern in the tile and on the walls. It also helps to have a cohesive color scheme when working with different patterns. This is what pulls it all together.”
Designer tip. “You can get away with lots of pattern in a small room, which is much harder to do in a large room or open-concept space,” Everts says. “I say take the risk and have fun. Or trust your designer to do it.”

7. ’90s to Timeless
Designer: Jackie Streusand of JS Dwellings Interior Design
Location: Austin, Texas
Size: About 65 square feet (6 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. The owners had found their forever home in the Shady Hollow neighborhood of Austin, Texas, but its interior was “very much stuck in the 1990s and needed to be brought up to date with timelessness intention,” designer Jackie Streusand says.
Special features. Unlacquered brass hardware and a pull-down faucet with a squeeze-handle sprayer add function and traditional charm — as well as a bit of gleam — to the transitional-style room. The charcoal-colored quartz countertop coordinates with the stacking washer and dryer, and its leathered finish, along with the neutral-toned rug and a rattan flush-mount light fixture (not pictured), lends texture to the space.
The laundry room is off the kitchen, which Streusand also remodeled with a similar color palette. “[W]e used a pocket door with a fluted glass window to transition the spaces,” she says. “Even with the door open, the room fit right in.”
Designer tip. Streusand proposes yet another use for a laundry room sink: “You can also plug the drain and fill it with ice to keep drinks cool when hosting,” she says.

8. Top-Notch
Designers: Laura Irion and Laura Peacock of Laura Design
Builder: Stebnitz Builders
Location: Williams Bay, Wisconsin
Size: About 64 square feet (6 square meters); 8 by 8 feet
Homeowners’ request. “This room … lacked character,” designer Laura Irion says. “We wanted to give it a coastal cottage charm that felt connected to the rest of the classic lakeside home design.” She and fellow designer Laura Peacock used Houzz Pro software for proposals, purchase orders and invoicing of furniture and lighting for the full-home remodel.
Special features. “Top-loaders were our clients’ request and made sense for the space,” Irion says. “In a small room, the large door swings of front-loaders can be difficult to work around. Without them, we were able to use rolling laundry carts for ease and function. The carts tuck under a counter on the opposite side of the room when not in use.”
Custom cabinetry by Knapp Kitchens painted in an airy blue (North Star by Sherwin-Williams), a petal-like pendant light and a 30-inch fluted fireclay farmhouse sink capture the coastal cottage feel. A Newport Brass Heaney pull-down faucet in French Gold coordinates with the brass cabinet knobs.
Basket-weave marble mosaic tile was a pinch hitter after the original choice — a thin mosaic veneer — was deemed susceptible to cracking. Fortunately, the result is just as beautiful but more durable and timeless. Dark, contrasting grout highlights the pattern and adds vintage character, while also hiding dirt and wearing well.
Designer tip. Irion is a fan of dressing up utility spaces with color, tile, pattern and wallpaper. She recommends smart organization and custom storage to elevate these rooms further. “When everything you need to do the job has a smartly appointed spot within easy reach, your work is easy and fun,” Irion says. “Well, as fun as laundry can be.”

9. Blue Belle
Designer: Jaime Dupes of Copper Sky Design + Remodel
Location: Atlanta
Size: About 68 square feet (6.3 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. Sitting above the kitchen on the second floor, this laundry room used to be an unfinished space occupied by an HVAC unit. The washer and dryer, meanwhile, were in a hallway closet. So designer Jaime Dupes, who collaborated with the homeowners using Houzz ideabooks, moved the HVAC unit into a new mechanical closet in one corner of the room, which freed up space to create a laundry room with the sink and countertop desired by the homeowners.
Special features. Opting for a stacked washer and dryer was key to squeezing in all of the homeowners’ wants, which also included a place to store an ironing board (not pictured). The countertop is quartz and the backsplash is ceramic tile — easy and low-maintenance but selected with aesthetics in mind. “We wanted to bring [the backsplash] all the way up to the ceiling to make the room feel a little bit larger and get some color in there,” Dupes says. “The floor is porcelain tile. It’s the workhorse of the tile world — [it’s] virtually indestructible!”
A section of the countertop recesses slightly to allow full access to the washer and dryer, which open on the right. Rolling hampers live in the open area beneath it (the one pictured is decorative), and a brass hanging bar is mounted on the wall above it.
Designer tip. Dupes says she’s a big fan of natural stone, but in a laundry room she recommends quartz countertops because chemicals in detergents and bleach can be abrasive and etch natural materials such as marble.

10. Island Breeze
Designer: Amy Tyndall Design (interior design) and Peter Quinn (architecture)
Builder: Daniel Steinkoler of Superior Construction Services
Location: Bald Head Island, North Carolina
Size: About 90 square feet (8.4 square meters)
Homeowner’s request. This laundry room is in a newly built coastal-style home with a cohesive palette of soft, beach-y greens and blues and natural materials. Owner, builder and project manager Daniel Steinkoler says designer Amy Tyndall worked closely with his wife, Carolyn, in the selection of the home’s furniture and finishes. “We wanted the laundry room to flow with the rest of the home and not feel so utilitarian but warm, pretty and functional,” Tyndall says. “My belief is that the laundry room should be just as gorgeous as every other room in your home, and we implemented that concept here.”
Special features. A smart top-load washer and electric dryer sit next to custom maple cabinets painted the same gray-blue (Van Courtland Blue by Benjamin Moore) as the shiplap paneling behind them. A small polished nickel pendant light hangs above the machines, coordinating with the chrome-and-clear cabinet handles and faucet. Patterned floor tiles add a little flair. “The floating shelf above the washer-dryer was designed not only as a support to the drying rod but also a place to display the client’s artwork and treasures,” Tyndall says.

Designer: Jocelyn Chiappone of Digs Design
Location: Osterville, Massachusetts
Size: 84 square feet (7.8 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. During the recent renovation of their 1890 home on Cape Cod, these homeowners added a laundry room to each floor, including this space at the end of a hallway. “This one is open to the rest of the house, so we needed it to be beautiful yet functional,” designer Jocelyn Chiappone says. The homeowners also requested a sink for hand-washing items.
Special features. The countertop is Jet Mist granite. The remodeling team installed an undermount sink and bridge-style faucet and covered the floor in brick tiles. “The brick flooring adds to the historical feel,” Chiappone says. “It is also tough underfoot and durable.
“The window is a focal point in this hallway, so I wanted it to be a special spot,” Chiappone says. “We added the shelves across the windows, which house a collection of spatterware.” A ceiling light fixture with a custom shade matches the wallpaper lining the open shelves in the cabinetry above the side-by-side washer and dryer. The pattern ties together the room’s crisp black-and-white color scheme.
Faucet: Purist, Kohler; washer and dryer, Electrolux; brick tiles: Real Thin Brick; fabric and wallpaper: Longfellow pattern, Quadrille; cabinet, wall and trim paint: White Dove, Benjamin Moore
