See How a Wood-and-Stone Vanity Inspires a Spa-Like Bathroom
A designer uses Houzz products to create a soothing space with warm and cool tones and statement-making features
One dependable way to create a cohesive interior design style is to choose one element to inspire all other details in a space. For the jumping-off point in this Fort Lauderdale, Florida, bathroom renovation, designer Andrea Martoccia-Fava of Motivo Home, in a product collaboration with Houzz, selected a statement-making Houzz vanity with wood cabinets, a natural stone countertop and gold details. That initial decision informed her next choices, leading to an inviting spa-like style that balances cool and warm tones with touches of texture and sparkle.
The vanity features oak-finished cabinets with soft-close drawers and doors. “It really adds a bit of luxury and quality,” Martoccia-Fava says. The vanity mixes open and closed storage and includes dividers to organize small and large items. There’s also a built-in outlet with USB ports. “You can blow-dry your hair and charge your phone,” Martoccia-Fava says. “It’s just so high-functioning but also incredibly beautiful.”

Martoccia-Fava used Houzz Pro business software to manage this bathroom remodel and to create the Mood Board shown here to create a cohesive design direction for the homeowners to review. “Every design project starts pretty much the same way: inspiration and Mood Boards,” she says. “It’s a great way for us to come up with a concept, share it with a client and make sure we’re all on the same page moving forward.”
Behind the vanity, blue-gray geometric tile from Houzz adds subtle movement and visual interest while complementing tones found in the countertop. “We knew it was just the perfect accent for this wall,” Martoccia-Fava says.
Mirrors with brushed gold details coordinate with the vanity hardware, faucets, towel holders and sconces. “Lighting is incredibly important,” Martoccia-Fava says. “You need to have lighting that is functional for getting ready. You also need to have some layered-in lighting for mood. Put those on dimmers. You’ll love it.”

Across from the vanity is a large freestanding tub and a spacious curbless shower. “It’s a spa moment,” Martoccia-Fava says.
The flooring is large-format porcelain tile in a chevron pattern. “It has great texture, a little bit of sheen, and because it’s a large-format tile, that means less grout lines,” Martoccia-Fava says. “And that’s what everybody loves.”

An arched niche backed in warm fluted wood coordinates with the vanity cabinet and adds a bit of texture. A bead-and-brass chandelier adds more texture and interest and coordinates with other brass details in the space.

The shower features two types of wall tiles and marble penny tile flooring that creates a nonslip surface. “It ties in the cool tones with a little bit of the warm elements as well,” Martoccia-Fava says. A rain shower head, wall shower head and handheld sprayer give a choice of bathing options.

The shower controls are mounted on the wall opposite the shower heads, allowing the user to turn on the water without getting sprayed. A bench provides a spot to rest. It features a brass trim detail that ties in with the window trim and adds to the cohesive design of the space.
“Good design completely transforms how people spend their time in the spaces that they live in,” Martoccia-Fava says.

The Houzz vanity kicked off the design scheme with its combination of warm wood cabinets, a cool-toned natural stone countertop and gold details. “I just love every single detail about this beautiful piece,” Martoccia-Fava says. She repeated the warm and cool tones in the tile selections, lighting finishes, plumbing fixtures and other details to create a soothing style.
