Others, such as countertops, furniture and decor, are always on display. To see how homeowners rank various home components when they’re remodeling, check out their top product purchases as reported in the recently released 2023 U.S. Houzz & Home Study.

Purchases of home decor, especially interior decor, soared in popularity among renovating homeowners in 2022. The share of homeowners purchasing the following increased by double digits year over year: small furniture (53%), large furniture (50%), artwork, storage and organization solutions (45%) and holiday decor (37%).
Purchases of even already-popular items, such as rugs (54%), rose significantly as well.
For the study, “large interior furniture” refers to things like lounge sets, dining sets and dressers. “Small interior furniture” refers to items like ottomans, accents and shelves.

As for outdoor decor, purchases of large furniture — which includes things like lounge sets and dining sets — saw a 5-point year-over-year increase, to 29%, in 2022. Purchases of outdoor artwork decreased by 4 points, to 6%.
Other popular outdoor decor products include lighting (27%), small furniture (20%) — which includes umbrellas, accents and benches — as well as fire features (18%), pillows and throws (16%) and rugs (13%).

Homeowners integrate technology into their homes in a variety of ways. In 2022, light fixtures were the most popular technology item among renovating homeowners (55%, a 4-point year-over-year increase). Even more notable is the share of homeowners who opted for smart lighting, which can be controlled from a mobile device. It grew from 14% in 2021 to 17% in 2022.

The most popular products purchased by homeowners remain paint (68%) and light fixtures (54%); the share for each is up by 2 percentage points for 2022 compared with 2021. But the number of homeowners buying key home improvement-related products in other categories also increased significantly.
For example, the percentage of homeowners who bought tile for walls and backsplashes rose by 7 points, to 35%, in 2022. For sinks, the percentage increased by 6 points, to 38%. It climbed 6 points for countertops as well, to 35%.
Also seeing an increase in popularity: faucets and shower heads (52%), building materials (44%), hardware for cabinets and doors (41%), major kitchen appliances (36%), toilets (31%) and shower stalls and doors (22%).
