Changes madeThe main change is the addition of a wall-mounted desk, which I purchased from Ensemble and had customised with my choice of colour and finish. It works well in this narrow space, as it doesn’t take up a lot of room and creates height to trick the eye into thinking the space is bigger than it actually is. https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/houzz-tour-a-budget-friendly-refresh-of-a-small-home-stsetivw-vs~155859823Houzz Tour: A Budget-friendly Refresh of a Small HomeSee how smart use of colour and materials, and considered storage solutions transformed a drab house for £27,000Georgia Madden 14 January 2022Senior writer, Houzz AustraliaEmailSaveComment22Like36PrintEmbed524ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLSEditCollaborateContributor’s Edit | Submitted | Copy edited | Clone | Reschedule | Un-Feature | Publish | Set Homepage Feature | Un-moderate | Hide blocked comments | Edit SEO | Change OwnerOriginal To: AU; Site: GB; Currently Featured in: GB With a budget of $50,000 AUD (around £27,000) and a broad brief to rejuvenate the main rooms in this weatherboard home, Candice Stroud, interior designer at Mos Interiors, focused her attention on colour, texture and introducing a few hero pieces...

Cairn To add a home office and a guest bedroom, Kieran extended into the roof to create this multifunctional space. On the dormer side is a large desk with wide drawers. “The idea of the built-in desk was that it can be used by either of the couple to do music or plan shoots and so on,” Kieran says. The flooring in here is oak parquet, which echoes the oak boards in the house below. https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/houzz-tour-multifunctional-rooms-in-a-stylish-victorian-house-stsetivw-vs~156701015 Eclectic Bedroom by Cairn Cairn Kieran left the old chimneys, simply painting the bricks white, to retain some of the feeling of the old loft, but lined most of the room in birch-veneered, fire-resistant panelling. “It has a warmth to it and an echo of the panelling in the room below, but in a more contemporary way,” he says. He also painted the timber beams. “There would have been too many different woods going on otherwise,” he says. Tucked into the eaves is a bed that can be rolled out for guests when necessary. “We rearranged the front structure to create a space big enough for the bed, as there were roof trusses in the way,” Kieran says. https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/houzz-tour-multifunctional-rooms-in-a-stylish-victorian-house-stsetivw-vs~156701015
MORE ABOUT THE LAYOUT THAN THE DECOR?Love an L shapeL-shaped rooms can be a design conundrum: the “spare” bit of space can be tricky to use well, often resulting in an under-used area. However, L shape can also open up untapped space, especially with so many of us looking for ways to carve out room to work in our homes. In this Spanish flat designed by Genís Bargués of BRFS, one end of the “L” in the main living area has been turned into a workspace, with a simple shelf supported by wall brackets at either end acting as a desk. This maximises the available space, rather than a freestanding piece of furniture that doesn’t fill the entire width. It’s perfect for occasional homeworking, but particularly good for schoolwork, as it’s very connected to the rest of the communal room when help is needed.Painting the carpentry to “disappear” into the walls is a neat trick to keep it discreet, while the shelf is also wide enough to accommodate propped up artwork that ties it into the living space. MORE ABOUT THE LAYOUT THAN THE DECOR?Carve out a cornerA slimline desk like this would work well on a landing area used occasionally for work, or – as is the case in this project designed by John Wilson of John Wilson Design – in the corner of a bedroom. The compact, one-bedroom tenement flat needed a multitude of small space solutions and the office area John created is conveniently compact.A desk with a slimline profile like this one creates less ‘bulk’ and keeps the space feeling airy. A single drawer doesn’t take up much room but provides somewhere to stash a laptop and any stray bits of paper. A neighbouring built-in cupboard could be employed for additional work storage if needed.Thinking of something similar? Ensure you have enough sockets, as trailing wires and extension cables would risk ruining the effect. More: From Dull Ex-rental to Characterful City Home
Pare back for perfectionIf you yearn for a minimalist space in which to focus, check out this standalone office, which is supremely elegant thanks to its pared-back design.“The owners wanted something simple, so we went for a peaceful and calming feel,” designer Céline Erlam of Indie & Co says. “[The woman] likes to blog about beautiful hotels, so we wanted to give her a space where she could concentrate and really get creative.”The soft, pale palette is mainly monochrome, but is punctuated by warm tones – there’s an ash-clad sideboard on the other side of the room and the pale floorboards and soft, worn leather chairs seen here lend a relaxing feel. The leaves outside also form part of the palette. If you don’t have such a green view, add indoor foliage and maybe a mirror to reflect it. Also try using a white paint with green undertones, or display subtle leaf motifs or artworks, like the small picture above the lamp here.More: A Victorian Terrace With a Calm, Minimalist Interior...
Tighten your paletteThis semi open-plan office doubles as a spare bedroom and is located behind fluted glass and lacquered metal doors that open onto the living space in this French flat. “It offers privacy while still letting light in,” designer Emmanuelle Houel of Renow says. Because of the glazing, the design in both spaces also needs to work together. As such, Emmanuelle opted to continue the soft sage green wall colour on both sides of the doorsInside the office/spare room, a horizontal strip of wall is painted in the same shade that features floor-to-ceiling in the dining room, connecting the room and the rest of the flat and creating visual coherence through the glass or open doors.More: A City Flat is Cleverly Personalised for its Owners[YOUR NOTES AND OLD COPY]MORE ABOUT THE LAYOUT THAN THE DECOR?Wondering whether this needs to be reworded a bit, too - these doors have replaced a wall between two rooms rather than dividing a previously large space, and that room is a bedroom, not a dedicated office (see the before and after plans). still a good idea, but with a different focus maybe? Debate installing a dividerAn office – rather than just an office corner – may feel out o...
Flood with natural lightIf you’re either creating a room from scratch or radically renovating, ask your architect for ideas on incorporating as much daylight as possible. The first floor study area in this project in a Victorian terrace, designed by architect Lizzie Fraher of Fraher & Findlay, is located in the top half of a new double-height extension and benefits from two windows and a rooflight, as well as a ‘borrowed’ window on the other side of a glass internal Juliet balcony overlooking the ground floor dining room. In a room with a small footprint, there’s a huge benefit in the generous light and views across a green roof and into the garden, which visually extend the walls.More: A Faded Home Gains Light, Flow and Historical DetailsTell us…Which of these work spaces most floats your boat and why? They lived in the property through every season before making any major alterations, just so they could see how the light fell in each room and work out how they could best use the space. After hiring Hayley Hammond Architects to design a large ground floor rear extension with an apex roof, a pair of roof lights and an almost entirely glazed rear wall, the family brought designer Krystyna Martin-Dominguez of K Space on board to help with the interior. An extra-long desk provides practical workspace for everyone, and Krystyna teamed this with useful wraparound bookshelves.Knox chairs, Made.
