1. Australia
One of the most common design challenges for Australians renovating their homes is to find a design that is classic enough to blend in with their historical property yet is highly functional and contemporary. This kitchen by Naibu Design, located in Sydney’s beachside suburb of Clovelly, strikes the right balance.
Sage green cabinets and white zellige backsplash tile create a soft style. Open shelves and white walls keep things light and airy. And wood stools, flooring and shelves add a touch of warmth. V-groove detailing on the island and wide-plank flooring nod to traditional design, while marble-look quartz countertops, flat-panel cabinet fronts and brushed-brass plumbing and hardware ground the space in a contemporary look.

For this Berlin penthouse, the owner wanted her home to feel like she was still in Japan. Architect Charlotte Wiessner from Carlo responded with a focus on wellness and combatting stress, taking reference from the Japanese shinrin yoku or “forest bathing” methodology.
In the kitchen, she used warm walnut wood for the cabinets, chairs and banquette. Pine green cushions join the wood tones to evoke that forest feel. And cabinet front detailing recalls shoji screen designs.
