Reclaimed Monterey cypress covers both the interior and exterior of this Feldman Architecture-designed modern home, which sits on a bluff above one of California’s best surf breaks.
Accordingly, Commune Design conjured a “Professor Who Surfs” aesthetic for the vacation house, filling it with its own designs plus a mix of midcentury gems and beautiful, handmade works representing a who’s who of contemporary artists and artisans.

Proving that bigger isn’t always better, architectural firm Laney LA designed this 1,400-square-foot, contemporary-meets-old-world house to fit the clients’ family of four to a T, with neither wasted space nor wasted opportunities to add function and style. The architects (whom the clients found on Houzz) even managed to squeeze in a lap pool on the lush, 2,760-square-foot lot. What’s more, they packed in a host of green features, including hydronic radiant heating and an ERV (energy recovery ventilator) system for cooling.

Set on 50 acres of tree-dotted Texas pasture, the home was designed with ample space for entertaining, with a large screened-in porch, shown here, and a pool with an adjacent guesthouse. Then, after owner KK McKenzie found designer Sommer Tate on Houzz, the duo joined their antiques-hunting forces and collaborated using room boards to cultivate a collected, lived-in look and feel. Natural finishes like butcher block and marble counters, unlacquered brass fixtures, reclaimed-wood beams and floors and lime-washed walls all add to the effect.

Interior designer Emily Pueringer gave her cousin Margaux Christianson’s new home a welcoming, eclectic style that nods to European farmhouses. Those rustic touches include wood ceiling beams, unlacquered brass finishes and hand-painted tiles, including one in the kitchen featuring a lucky rooster.
The warm wood-and-white kitchen also features a terra-cotta-colored Lacanche range, a cozy banquette, a large island and a spacious butler’s pantry that’s lined in one of several darling wallpapers used throughout the home.
