9. Modern Spanish Makeover
For this Scottsdale, Arizona, kitchen, Cdot Design Studio transformed a traditional Spanish-style space into a stripped-down, modern version that retains its original character. Existing terra-cotta floor tile, an arched range hood with a hand-painted terra-cotta tile backsplash and a custom island with an end-grain walnut butcher block counter and spindle leg detail merge Old World style with a contemporary twist.

Set among the woods in Sterling, Massachusetts, this kitchen by designer Ruth Bergstrom of Kitchen Associates plays up its country setting with lower cabinets and an island made of natural knotty alder with a brown glaze. White upper cabinets and a porcelain tile backsplash in varying shades of white lighten the look and keep things from feeling too rustic.

7. Dramatic Effect
After removing a secondary set of stairs, designer Candice Morgan of Premium Cabinets Saint Louis nearly doubled the size of this St. Louis, Missouri, kitchen. That decision created room for a new 10½-by-4½-foot island with a dark-stained base and marble-look countertop that accommodates seven cane counter stools. The bold forest green perimeter cabinets with brass hardware add their own drama to the scene.

6. Seamless Style
Sleek, contemporary style defines this San Jose, California, kitchen by Mr. & Mrs. Construction & Remodeling. Low-profile edge pulls on the cabinets and an island made from one piece of wood create a streamlined look. Large slabs of marble-look porcelain for the countertops cut down on visible seams.

5. Light and Open
To create a more open and airy feel for this Oakland, California, kitchen, ODS Architecture knocked down a wall between the kitchen and dining area and relocated a staircase. A crisp white-and-wood material palette, low-profile hardware and minimal trim details keep the aesthetic fuss-free and suit the kitchen’s new open flow.

I'm so happy to see wood in kitchens again instead of the incessant white on white on white. Much warmer.
I like #2-The Balanced Approach. Would like it even more with a counter top that had some color to it. Maybe a leathered black or Fantasy Brown granite.
I love them all! Each of these incorporates their own character and variation of wood and color that seemed to be missing in the all white trend.
