Before & After: A Spacious Bathroom With All the Amenities
Uniting a cramped bathroom and separate toilet gave this young family enough space for personality and utility
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
Our client wanted to create an airy, bright and cosy space that was functional and spacious. They requested the removal of the existing wall that separated the main bathroom and toilet to create one large space for their growing family.
The owners have a bohemian style; their inspiration for this renovation highlighted the use of natural timbers, pops of colour and elements of texture.

The bathroom before works.
Starting point
We were able to see how much space we had to work with as soon as we removed the dividing wall between the powder room and the bathroom. This gave us the opportunity to explore layout options and address our client’s needs and wants, which was great because it helped us come up with a better design solution.

Key design aspects
Colour palette:
The bathroom utilises rich orange and brown tones, which is present throughout the terrazzo and natural timbers. These hues have been paired with bright whites to create an atmosphere that’s both calming yet stimulating.

Materials palette:
- Natural terrazzo tiles.
- Solid surface basins.
- Natural Australian chestnut.
- The use of a white handmade feature tile adds a subtle touch of character and texture to the space.
Key pieces of furniture/fittings:
- The hero piece is the Corsia Toscana natural terrazzo that is featured in the back of the recessed niches.
- This is highlighed by the new Velux skylight.
- Other complementary features include the solid Australian chestnut vanity with matching floating shelves.
- Brushed-brass tapware.
- To tie the space together, we installed a handmade speckled ceramic wall sconce from Lighting Collective between the two shaving cabinets.
- To add another level of luxury to the space, under-tile heating by Warmtech was installed.
Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
A freestanding bathtub was installed in the centre of the room under the new double-glazed window, and a walk-in shower was built along the left-hand wall. By offsetting these fixtures to the side, our client is now able to enjoy the space without feeling cramped or claustrophobic.
We also installed a double-bowl vanity on the right-hand side of the bathroom; this greets you when you walk in and allows two people to use the vanity at the same time.

What challenges did you have to work around?
One of the challenges of this project was the existing placement of the client’s window and the direction of the roof trusses. Fortunately, by installing the freestanding bath under the window, we were able to add a recessed niche that matched the length of the bath to create symmetry. We were lucky that the placement of their roof trusses allowed us to install a new skylight, centred between the bath and vanity.

Why do you think this room works?
This bathroom is a modern take on a classic look. The new layout provides a functional and spacious bathroom, perfect for a young growing family. The inclusion of the skylight creates a sense of luxury and allows the space to be utilised during the day without the need for turning on the lights.
Although this bathroom houses a range of key feature items, it is not overpowering; each item plays it part in creating a well rounded, comfortable space that nails the client’s brief.
