10 Top Lighting Looks at the Spring 2022 High Point Market
Statement-making lighting — whether oversize, curvy, brass or grass — shone bright at the furnishings industry event
The lighting fixtures on display at this spring’s trade-only High Point Market ran the gamut from laid-back (coconut bead chandeliers) to ultra luxe (crystal-and-brass sconces). Still, certain features — oversize shapes, mixed materials, wavy forms, natural references — turned up time and again. And there was nary a wallflower in the group.
Here are 15 trends that we registered while touring the showrooms at the market, held April 2 to 6, 2022. The looks may be diverse, but they conveyed a single message: Whatever your style, this season’s statement lighting can amp it up.

2. Natural Fibers
Woven and wrapped plant material continues to be all the rage in lighting, as it is in other categories of home furnishings. Note the rattan wrapping on the previous pendant and the bamboo wrapping around the frame of this Regina Andrew Newport lantern.

This spring’s casual, plant-derived finishes incorporated more contrasting materials and applications of color. This brass-accented linear Baja chandelier, also from Arteriors, is made from coconut shell and wood in a dark gray wash. The showstopper is scaled to command attention over a dining table.

3. Nature Motifs
All sorts of flora and even some fauna made their way into this season’s lighting shapes — translated both literally and abstractly. Among our favorite floral fixtures was this Peony light from Corbett Lighting (part of the Hudson Valley Lighting Group). The handcrafted pendant, shown here in gold leaf but also available in silver leaf, wraps around a white glass globe.

Interior designer Cheryl Luckett’s new collection for Wildwood includes this ceramic Savoir Faire table lamp, also available in white, which features a smattering of magnolia blossoms.

4. Mixed Materials and Metals
Brass, which usurped silver a couple of years ago, continues to be the dominant metal tone in both traditional and contemporary lighting designs. This season, many of the fixtures paired it with other materials, colors and textures for an updated look. The Pavo pendant light — from Northern California interior designer Jay Jeffers’ third collaboration with Arteriors — combines vintage brass, dark walnut and clear acrylic.

Stone (especially marble) and metal combinations were popular at the show. The midcentury-inspired Demeter floor lamp from Mr. Brown London has a black metal body, a black marble base and opaque glass globes set against hammered burnished brass plates.
Black and brass and white and black remained the dominant color combinations in lighting showrooms (though trend forecasters see more bold color on the horizon).
The Malone wall sconce from Varaluz features a folded, hexagonal French gold reflector that contrasts with a matte black backplate and arm.

5. Organic Crystals
Natural inspiration also took a crystalline shape this season. Pieces of what looked like quartz (or dead ringers for it) were integrated into fixtures for a more earthy take on the traditional cut-glass chandelier.
This outdoor wall sconce from Allegri Crystal by Kalco Lighting’s new Esterno Cristallo collection features clear Firenze crystal spears backlit by LEDs.

6. Retro Refreshes
Contemporary takes on Space Age-style chandeliers are a showroom staple. This season, the best examples felt more forward-looking than retro. This Dabito x Mitzi Hikari chandelier, which was selected for the market’s spring 2022 TrendWatch program, plays with asymmetry and straight and curved lines.

7. Scallops
While sleek, linear lighting also had a strong presence in the lighting showrooms, many of the designs took cues from the rounded-furniture trend and embraced curves, including youthful-looking scallops.
The Roshani table lamp by multi-hyphenate creator Dabito in collaboration with Mitzi (a contemporary brand within the Hudson Valley Lighting Group) doubles down on the trend with an arched base and a scalloped shade.

The versatile Regina Andrew Summer pendant, available in two sizes, combines a scalloped edge with on-trend woven rattan.
8. Art Deco Influences
The scallop trend seems to be taking a cue from another on-trend style, Art Deco, which generally is characterized by symmetrical patterns (including scallop shell patterns) and geometric details.
The white globe lights so popular in recent seasons span many eras and styles, but the brass chain and ribbed detail on this Haru pendant lamp from Corbett Lighting give it a French Art Deco vibe. Meanwhile, the marble accent and the 18-inch diameter make it feel au courant. (It comes in a 13½-inch option as well.)

The era’s lighting traditionally included stepped and tiered silhouettes, glass panels and faceted forms. Eichholtz’s Hector, a modern interpretation of an Art Deco chandelier, channels 1920s glamour with a bronze or brushed brass finish and long, clear tubes that fall in three tiers.

With its vintage polished brass star shapes, each capped by glass globes, the Jackstone chandelier from Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s spring 2022 collection for Corbett Lighting recalls the children’s game of jacks. It’s also an eye-catching take on the classic Sputnik chandelier, which dates to 1939.
9. 1970s Style
1970s-influenced designs began popping up a couple of years ago, so it’s no surprise that ’70s-inspired lamps, including colorful mushroom lamps, pleated-shade Caprani floor lamps and globe lamps, have been enjoying a resurgence too.
Regina Andrew’s Apollo lamp, whose silhouette is reminiscent of the 1977 Oluce Atollo table lamp, is wrought in sophisticated blackened iron, making it at home in clean, contemporary spaces.

10. Leather Accents

Playing with scale is an easy way to refresh a classic design. We saw a lot of supersize fixtures at the market, such as this Arteriors Midori pendant, which blows up a familiar midcentury shape to a 32-inch diameter.
