Bathroom of the Week: A Fresh Take on Midcentury Modern
A design-build firm creates a warm, modern primary bathroom with a wet room area
These homeowners were looking to update and expand their 1950s ranch house in Sunnyvale, California. And they wanted to do it in a way that was cohesive with the midcentury architecture. An addition and full renovation of the house was designed and carried out by Baron Construction & Remodeling, changing its layout and giving the couple an additional 700 square feet of space. The addition contains the kitchen and the primary suite, including this primary bathroom.
The accent tile behind the tub is a 24-by-48-inch porcelain that looks like wood. The teak shelf on the freestanding tub plays off the tile. Both the wood-like wall and the shape of the tub add a bit of boho style to the modern space.
The tile on the rest of the shower walls is 15-by-30-inch porcelain. The subtle variation of gray hues gives these tiles a concrete-like look, lending the room a modern industrial touch.
The plumbing fixtures are oil-rubbed bronze. This finish also adds warm organic tones around the room.
The casement window opens for ventilation and has opaque glass for privacy.

The floor tile from the bathroom continues into the wet room area. It’s a 15-by-30-inch porcelain in a dark charcoal color that resembles stained concrete. Along the bottom of the shower head wall is a long, linear drain. The homeowners preferred a shower curb over a curbless entry to separate the wet room from the rest of the bathroom.
The custom vanity has dual sinks and a white quartz countertop. The clean lines of the vanity and its hardware nod to the midcentury era. A black-and-brass modern light fixture adds more warmth to the space. The custom mirror’s black frame provides sharp contrast to the lighter colors in the room.

Size: 85 square feet (7.9 square meters)
Design-build project coordinator: Leeran Shlomo of Baron Construction & Remodeling
The bathroom has a 45-square-foot wet room area that contains the shower and bathtub, separated from the rest of the space by a clear glass enclosure. Across from the vanity is a toilet room with a pocket door. The toilet is a modern wall-mounted model.
“Our clients wanted a modern space with a touch of boho to it,” project manager Leeran Shlomo says. “The project began with the hickory wood we chose for the vanity. From there we chose an accent tile behind the bathtub that would play off the wood and chose the other tiles to complement it.” The vanity’s wood warms the space and provides contrast to the cooler tones in the room.
