Bathroom of the Week: Pink, Posh and Patterned for a Young Girl
A designer creates a bathroom that’s elegant and energetic for her 7-year-old daughter
Designer Gita Jacobson wanted her kids’ input right from the start when designing their en suite bathrooms in her family’s new-build home in Lafayette, California. Her 5-year-old son’s bathroom features a bright orange vanity cabinet with Tyrannosaurus rex cabinet pulls, but her 7-year-old daughter preferred a more sophisticated look. Blue-and-white mosaic floor tile, a vivid pink vanity with makeup area and traditional-style hardware and fixtures combine for a look that’s refined yet youthful.
Pink is the daughter’s favorite color, so finding the right place to add it to the bathroom was a must. “If she had her way, the entire bathroom would probably be pink,” the designer says. “But the vanity cabinet made the most sense. I’m not sure she will ever outgrow pink, but if she does, it’s an easy fix.”
Another request for the vanity was that it have a makeup area and stool. The faux fur stool with brass hairpin legs adds a posh touch to the room.

The vanity has a cabinet on one side and a pullout drawer on the other. There’s an outlet below the drawer to plug in a hair dryer or curling iron. The vanity top is white quartz with a chunky edge.

All of the hardware and fixtures in the bathroom are satin brass. Jacobson’s daughter was drawn to hardware and fixtures with a traditional style and rounded lines. The custom vanity mirror with a satin brass edge takes up most of the wall behind the sink to reflect light and make the room appear larger.

Jacobson says she went with white mini brick tile for the shower surround to contrast with the busier floor tile and make the area appear larger. “It’s a pretty small shower, so keeping the tile simple and small makes it look more expansive.”
The satin brass shower head can be adjusted to almost 7 feet high or it can be used as a handheld.
There’s a shower niche on one wall to hold bath products and a pony wall on the other side that Jacobson’s daughter currently uses. “She’s still a bit too short to reach the shower niche, so the top of the pony wall works well for now,” Jacobson says.

A close-up photo of the shower floor shows its white penny round tiles and brass drain cover with an intricate pattern. “We found a pattern for the drain cover that complements the mosaic floor tile,” Jacobson. “I love to add those little details that really elevate a space.”
There’s a small (2-inch) drop down from the bathroom floor to the shower floor, which Jacobson likes to add to all her bathroom projects to help keep water contained in the shower area.

Jacobson says her daughter was hands-on from the start when it came to designing her bathroom. They started with selecting a floor tile that would make a bold statement and inform the other material decisions in the room. “I brought home tons of different tile samples and my daughter loved to place them on the floor to see how they would look,” Jacobson says.
They selected a blue-and-white mosaic floor tile in porcelain that has the look of encaustic cement. Jacobson started by laying full tiles in the center of the room to best showcase the pattern and then worked her way out.
