Houzz Call: Show Us Your Vintage and Antique Holiday Decorations
If you’ve inherited or collected Christmas decor from the days of yore, post your photos and share your stories
Among my fondest childhood memories are those of decorating our family’s rambling farmhouse for the holidays. Each December, my mother and I would pour glasses of eggnog, put Bing Crosby on the record player and deck the halls with Christmas-themed finds from antique fairs and heirlooms passed down by my grandmother.
Today, my decorating style is modern and minimal. But when the holidays roll around, my house fills up with vintage Santa Claus cookie jars, antique brass sleigh bells and other decorations that hark back to Christmases past. Does nostalgia drive your holiday decorating scheme too?
Show and tell: What cherished vintage and antique items, either found or inherited, are centerpieces of your holiday celebrations? For example, they might be ornaments, toys or trees, as pictured below, or they could be functional objects like holiday-themed linens or dishes. Pour yourself some eggnog, then upload your well-lighted photos and share your stories in the Comments.

In addition to finding vintage and antique ornaments at flea markets and garage sales, many people on Houzz have inherited boxes upon boxes of them. Once their trees are full, some display the overflow in bowls (as pictured here), turn them into wreaths or hang them from chandeliers.
If you’ve found a creative way to display or repurpose vintage Christmas ornaments, show us your handiwork.

There’s something about an antique wooden sled or toboggan that says “winter wonderland.” This Fleetwing Flash sled, from upstate New York, adorns a handsome log cabin in Bend, Oregon, that’s decorated for Christmas with rustic flair.

Houzz reader Chris Yarbrough shared this photo of a vintage Marx model train circling his Christmas village.
If a vintage train makes a stop in your Christmas Village or under your tree, we’d love to see it. (And we’d like to see your vintage Christmas village too.)

This silver aluminum tree – elevated on a vintage suitcase and decorated with pink heirloom Shiny Brite ornaments – adorns the 1887 Cincinnati home of Tiffany Tomeo, who used to assemble it with her grandmother every year. The fresh pine scent of a live Christmas tree is undeniably nostalgic, but this midcentury-modern showstopper makes a compelling argument for going faux.
