LOL just had this SAME convo with husband tonight over dinner. He SELLS a lot of these brands--no I can't share where---and he claims that the fridges will only last about 4 years now---for the past few years---and if you get longer than that you are very lucky. Part of it is the chemicals they can use now--like the ones in your car AC--are NOT the same old ones that did indeed KEEP things COLD.
I had noticed (while I was waiting for a new water heater to be hauled onto to my trailer) that the newer fridges have EXTREMELY THICK doors---I guess this is more insulation but it really seems to cut DOWN on the actual useable space inside.
We have a Fridgidaire that is about 10 years old--we did have a complete fail when the u nit was 3 DAYS out of Warranty--the company stonewalled me until I mentioned two important things::: One is I am diabetic and cannot have un-chilled insulin and I had just received a shipment of several hundred dollars worth of the drug; and Two after about ten convos with the co. I happened to mention that my husband was the Manager at the store we had bought the unit at--suddenly the ENTIRE convo changed and we not only had a NEW fridge but we ALSO got a check for the insulin--since it had not been chilled I was unwilling to trust it--and since my health insurance would not replace it (and why should they!) Frigidaire ended up paying full retail---almost as much as the unit cost. And they gave me a check for the value of the spoiled food. It also has the annoying "shelf" behind the shelves--things get back there and go un-noticed and die. But you don;t have the USE of the full depth of the actual SHELF---ugh. And there is NO seal between these shelves and the base of the fridge so you are sometimes--SURPRISED!!!---with stuff that spilled that went un-noticed because--you can't SEE back there and DOWN there.
We were "lucky" that we had a college dorm fridge in storage and we have a huge upright freezer. Since then tho we have had to replace--I finally gave up on these---the deli drawer---the side slides kept breaking off and there was this annoying small 3/4" space UNDER it where things went to die---so I bought a few clear bins at Christmas Tree shop for those things and the deli stuff is just as good in those. We never had the ice maker hooked up but some times the mech seems to "stick" if a box or something hits it and it makes a hugely annoying noise; the temp selector seems to move ON ITS OWN and last week it was turned OFF when no one was in the house! It is in a spot where it is not easy to see or move so HOW does this keep happening? And if it is humid or really cold you have to fiddle with it. This cost around $600 new.
On the other hand--I have a 30+year old Montgomery Wards--remember THEM?---upright full size freezer still going strong. When we moved out of our old farmhouse some one took the ancient--like 1950's--chest freezer to their home--prob still working! And when we moved into that house there was an OLD 1955 GE Monitor Top fridge---which we donated to a local food co-op and some clever guys tinkered with it and got it running and I would not be at ALL surprised if it was going still somewhere!
We have a Frigidaire dishwasher which is--crap; and a Frigidaire stove we got from someone who bought it and never used it (Our old one caught fire when the tech came to put in a SAFETY CUT OFF---ummmm) and it is---OK. But not nearly the same as my old 1930's Tappan--I LOVED THAT STOVE and it was too big at 40" and too heavy to be moved out of our old house. That had amazing features that I have never seen elsewhere (altho they may have been common then!)--It had a Crisper drawer for crackers and cereal etc; that had a re-useable "pod" with some sort of crystals in it that you placed in the oven every once in a while and that sucked in moisture! It had beautiful RED glass rings that went behind the stove knobs and when the gas was turned ON they LIT UP---great way to KNOW your gas was ON in case you had a burner blow out. Also had a pilot light and kept my whole huge kitchen toasty! Lovely pull out crumb trays--WHEN did THOSE vanish from stoves? I miss that stove.
I wouldn't spend the outrageous amount of money on ANY appliance---the basic washer and dryer?----Fine with me and mine came off Craigs list when some one moved and work FINE. And we have 7 people here! Might have to keep an eye out for OLD fridge--and BTW you can have them REPAINTED at car body places for WAY LESS than a NEW one would cost.
