The Beauty of Breezeways
Whenever I visit my grandmother in Ohio we pull up into the driveway and then enter the breezeway to get into her home. This is the only place that I've ever seen a breezeway before so I associate it with a lot of nostalgic feelings. Lately I've been thinking about how many cool things you could do with a breezeway if you had one.
For those who don't know, a breezeway is a structure that connects the main part of the home to another part of the home. It most commonly connects the main house to a garage but it can connect almost any two buildings. It has a roof; it may be open-sided or enclosed.
My grandma uses her breezeway mostly as a storage room. However a breezeway could be many other things. It could be a transitional space that helped shift your "out in the world mood" to your "back at home" mood. It could be a work space or creative space or play room. It could be an extra room of the house or a covered outdoor area.
What would you do with your breezeway if you had one?

Here we have a fairly traditional open-sided breezeway. The design of the home and the secondary area (a garage maybe?) are the same and the roof that connects them is the same as both buildings. It creates a seamless look between the spaces.
This is an example of a twist on the traditional breezeway. What it connects is the outdoor room seen in the picture with the Master Suite (which you can't see here). It's an open-sided breezeway with a really unique roof. It would be improved by adding some outdoor furniture between the two spaces to really connect them in a more meaningful way.
This is actually a hallway, not a breezeway. However one entire wall is made up of windows. This creates the effect of a breezeway in a home that doesn't have one. What a great design idea!
Here's another hallway that serves as inspiration for a breezeway. I think you should hang great decorations in the breezeway. Choose something that will allow you to leave the work day behind and transition into your home space each day. These lights would be terrific for an enclosed breezeway.
Here we can see how a bedroom could be a separate part of the house. It is separated from the main house by a breezeway. What privacy! I love it.
This is just an entrance, not a breezeway, but it's a design that I love. If I had a home like this, I'd build a greenhouse here and use this open design to create a breezeway connecting the greenhouse to the rest of the home.
This is a screened dining porch but it inspires an idea in me for an enclosed breezeway. Wouldn't it be great to connect you kitchen to your garage with an breezeway dining room? It could be light and airy with the windows open or warm in winter. It would bring everyone together during the time of day when everyone's grabbing breakfast and trying to get out the door. What do you think?
I'd also love to have a breezeway that functions as a little reading space or space for creativity. If you have a small house but you do have a breezeway then converting the breezeway into this type of room seems like a great project.
If you need more quiet in your creative space than a breezeway room would allow then perhaps converting the breezeway into your kids' playroom would be a better idea? This would allow you to keep an eye on them when you're working in the yard or garage. Plus you could then convert their playroom into your creative space!
I have to say that I love the idea of adding a cool outdoor sink like this one to your breezeway. Perfect for a breezeway that serves as a work space or art space!

My aunt and uncle had a breezeway that connected the main house with the garage and guest bedroom/bathroom. It was open at both ends and connected to the main house at the kitchen. No one ever went in the front door, I don't think. A breezeway is on the list of things in my dream home.
