Flowers: I almost killed 5th-year-own-root Bolero by moving it, I have no choice, it's a poor drainage spot with only 3 inch. growth after winter. I no longer move roses older than 3 years, I fix the soil around the rose by scooping out soil around the root-zone to at least 1 foot, then add alfalfa meal & compost & calcium like gypsum for alkaline soil. If the soil is very old, I replace it with MG-garden-soil for roses.
I killed too many roses by moving it and putting fertilizer in the new planting hole .. after being moved, roots can't handle salty nor acidic fertilizer, just like tiny rootings.
When own-roots get older, roots are chunky & woody like Dr.Huey-rootstock and they hate being moved, takes at least 3 months to recuperate. With wimpy roses less than 3 years old, I dig it up to put in a pot.
Rouge Royal likes SOLUBLE fertilizer. After June 1, we get into 90 F heat so I use SOLUBLE Schultz fertilizer high in potassium NPK 17-18-28 plus alfalfa meal for shiny leaves. With tall roses I use low nitrogen Masterblend NPK 4-18-38. I bury roses so deep in zone 5 that it's impossible for calcium & phosphorus & potassium to go down, thus best as SOLUBLE.
