Design Trends for 2010: "Harvest"
This is the second in a series of ideabooks in which I go into more detail about trends I highlighted in an earlier ideabook called 10 big design trends for 2010. After commenter stacystyle mentioned she'd like to hear more about the trends, I got excited.
Today's trend, "Harvest," confused me a little at first. UK design expert Danielle James describes it like this:
"Natural - Innocent - Conservative. Think white linens with attention to detail, restrained but textural, sentimental. Wholesome and innocent, this style will have a slightly sophisticated edge through the use of neutral colours such as beige, ivory, black, taupes and caramels. Formality is mixed with informality. This style is all about family and acknowledges where our food comes from. Think rural, wheat fields in the sunshine, farm houses - abundance of an earthy kind. The current ‘Classic Contemporary’ interior style will evolve into this."
My big takeaways from this description are the ones about family and creating a space that comfortably mixes formality with informality.
I think those are great guides for the design of any room, and I think these spaces do a good job of conveying those characteristics:

I looked very hard for a kitchen with a sofa in it, but couldn't find one anywhere. These comfy chairs, positioned between the dining room and kitchen, serve something of the same purpose. They bring everyone in the house together, even if they're busy doing different activities. Someone's in the kitchen cooking, someone else is curled up reading, and the kids are at the table doing homework - it's a great picture.
This is the image I used to capture the Harvest trend in the original design trends ideabook. I love it because I think it captures so many elements of the trend. The furniture looks comfortable, but not scruffy, with enough room for a whole family to gather on the sofas and snuggle under the blanket.
This room captures all the cool white and neutral elements of the trend, plus the addition of a chaise makes the room inviting. The individual elements are formal, but the bed looks so comfortable that the overall look is softened.
