FWIW nobody in Manhattan needs a family size refrigerator especially in a one bedroom apartment. Most kitchens have what are called apartment sized refrigerators because there the lifestyle is essentially picking up food at the corner bodega/Korean fruit market or equivalent if eating at home; having food delivered from a restaurant or meeting friends for dinner at a restaurant. People in Manhattan actually do live the European lifestyle in terms of food shopping :-) My Manhattan apartment had a tiny freezer which could fit a bottle of vodka and perhaps a Lean Cuisine.
My current condo is in a high rise that was built in 1965. Most most of the units have been renovated but any that haven't been (e.g. the equivalent of OP's place) sell to people at a considerable discount which reflects the cost of remodeling plus the expense and hassle involved. There is absolutely no way to live in a high rise apartment while it is being reomodeled so cost of living elsewhere is an additional expense.
