Sit a Spell: The Art of the Front Porch
Front porches can be rustic or modern, packed with furniture or practically empty. There's a design for every lifestyle and for every aesthetic. Here are some of my favorites:
In the city, porches are often traded for stoops. A set of clean steps is just as inviting as a traditional front porch stocked with rocking chairs. I like how this home has space to frame the steps with greenery, but potted plants and flowers placed on the siteps themselves are a great, similarly warm alternative.
This country ranch house is miles away from the beach, but it's got the same vibe as the beach house above. It's easy to imagine lazy afternoons spent on the porch, just watching the sun set. I love the little sofa placed on this porch. It's sandy color blends in perfectly and the comfort factor is high.
This is a perfect little beach cottage. From the sunny blue siding to the pristine white of the trim, it's casual and summery. I like that the furniture on the porch is simple and white, just like the trim - it's clean and bright. I might even add a couple of bright yellow or green splashes. As long as everything stays fun.
All of this warm wood is cool and boat-like in the summer, but warm and cozy in the winter. The bench is a great spot to sit in nice weather and the basketful of logs is a great touch. Not only is attractive, it's also a reminder that if the evening turns chilly, the fireplace is just steps away.
