Pool, my parents were young children during the Depression, and it made a permanent impression on them as it did for most in that generation, so nothing ever went to waste! As farmers, they had the freezer filled with meats, and meat was on the table three times a day. Always leftovers, and always a need for sandwiches to take out to the field for a 4:00 lunch during the busiest times. Taking lunch to dad in the field was often the highlight of the day...we loved being with our dad. And when we were old enough to reach the pedals, that meant we got to drive the small pickup truck from the house to wherever he happened to be. I remember sitting in the shade of the tractor wheel and drinking KoolAid with dad. Wow. Simple times. My sons don't have such memories. City boys. But they do have memories of using the old-fashioned grinder for cranberries. When teaching preschool, I took hand grinders for cranberries as well as applesauce. Those were some of the best days of the year! The students remembered, too!
