The Family Home: Creative Multi-Use Workspaces
The art of together time is elementary with multipurpose home workspaces that appeal to grownups and kids alike
Families everywhere are leaving the traditional home office behind and opting instead for a more family-friendly creative space. The modern-day craft room is a place where adults and children can congregate together, where you can pay your bills while keeping an eye on the children and their art projects. In this week's installment of The Family Home, we'll take a look at eight inspiring rooms, each with a tip of its own.
Choose a room with great natural light. If you have the option, choose the sunniest room possible for your creative workspace. Rooms with abundant natural light are more inviting and best suited for activities that may strain your eyes.
Embrace open shelving. It's important to have plenty of supplies on hand for your children's use. Make it easy for them to access art supplies, toys and games with inexpensive open shelving like this piece from IKEA. If you're not keen on seeing everything stored on the shelves, try placing things in baskets for a tidier look.
Create activity-specific zones. If you plan to use your space for multiple activities, delegate specific areas for them. For example, if you love to sew, make a sewing corner. If you have a child who loves to draw, consider adding a drafting table and all the necessary supplies. This will help keep your room organized and make every member of the family feel at home.
Don't be afraid of color. A creative space is the perfect room in your home to express your bold side. Not ready to commit to aqua walls? Try painting a storage cabinet for a nice pop of color.
Make sure there are plenty of work surfaces. The point of this room is to have the family creating together. Ensuring that everyone has a spot and is comfortable should be a top priority.
Be creative with the décor. Going bold with the décor in your workspace is an opportunity to show your artistic side. How about a family art project? You can create a look similar to this installation by having family members paint pieces of white cardstock with watercolors. When you tire of the look, simply remove it and brainstorm the next project together.
Make it comfortable. The goal is to entice every family member to want to spend time there, even if creating something isn't the goal. Cozy seating, plush pillows and a few favorite books will lure loved ones in.
