I’ve been having a similar issue. Although there are many photos of built-in microwaves on Houzz and, according to internet sources, some wall cabinets are now made four to six inches deeper to accommodate the built-in, there are very few appropriate microwaves available. It is considered unsafe to use a countertop microwave in a built-in situation. The few machines that will fit an 18” depth cabinet are mostly outrageously expensive. Especially if you are like me and use one only occasionally. Even those microwaves that have smaller outside dimensions frequently require a full 20” depth cabinet for venting.
Im considering scrapping the microwave entirely or putting it in the pantry although my first choice would be to have it built into the available space.
Thank you to those of you who answered this post previously for your suggestions. Very helpful. Anyone out there found a narrow microwave recently?
