Wow this is a big piece of soapstone

Large volume, neutral textured tile.

Really interesting to see a tiled volume of this size in such a craftsman context.

Colors all wrong but proportions are spot on.

Large fireplace volume with snazzy tile

I can't figure out why this is resonating with me except I think the proportions are cool.

Simple trim, no mantel and great tile surround

Limestone surround plus art here are nicely focal but neutral.

Soapstone surround is a little more forceful but still minimalist. Obviously the ceilings here are super-high.

The tile on this isn't right but I like how the proportions fit into the room - low ceiling feels familiar to our space!

The "decorative" elements of the mantel's mill work feel appropriately simple. Also I like the white-black effect.

I also like this very bare-bones mantel - still semi-traditional "upright" fireplace proportions but very minimalist in execution. I wouldn't choose this tile, though.

This was the tile I had in mind for the fireplace surround, but probably lighter in color.

There's too much crown moulding on this one, but the monochrome grey tile against the white mantel is really attractive.
