Well, the good news is that the space is nice. You've got prep room on either side of the stove, landing space by the fridge and a window above the sink. I'm hoping you have a dishwasher to the right of the sink and guessing it is black, too?
I would try to make it as bright and clean as possible for as little money. Here's what I would do:
1. paint the trim and pantry doors white to match the cabs/other trim in the house
2. take down the scalloped trim above the sink
3. paint the backsplash white or rip it out, redo the drywall and paint the wall white.
4. paint your lowers a dark but warm charcoal or black depending on your preference. This is going to make your range and dishwasher blend and tie in the floor
5. before you paint, choose cheap but nice new bar pulls, fill the holes from the old ones.
6. hang either a bamboo shade or choose a nice fabric roman shade
Before you do any painting watch a couple of videos. If you are committed to redoing in 5 years, it doesn't have to be perfect, but there are some basic steps that will make it easier and last longer.
It's going to be a nice space and the above is going to cost less than $300 (depending on the pulls you choose) and be done in not much time at all.
