Interior designer Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs calls her home in Fort Worth, Texas, her laboratory. It’s where she’s created flexible rooms in which she can swap pieces in and out to keep the look feeling fresh. “I wanted my house to feel cohesive and connected but also create these moments in different spaces so I could walk into one room and it had a look and feel that was completely its own, but it didn’t feel disjointed from the rest of the house,” she says.
In this video, Curtis gives a virtual tour of her home and shares tips for layering paint and texture to create versatile rooms filled with special little moments.

For her living room, Curtis wanted a bright, white space against which textures and accessories could pop.

In one corner of the living room, Curtis added some wood pieces to a portion of the wall to highlight an angled ceiling. She then painted the surfaces a deep, dark blue to create dimension.
Curtis says the layers in her home give her the best of both — or several — worlds.
“I get my bright white walls, I get my pops of color, I get texture, I get organic modern,” she says.

How to Achieve Organic Modern Style
This photo of Curtis’ children’s room was the most-saved kids’ room photo on Houzz in 2016 — and it’s easy to see why.
With the leafy view out the window, Curtis wanted to make the kids’ room feel like a treehouse. She built a bunk bed-like system that features a bed on top that floats over a platform bed below. An open space at the end of the platform provides a spot for the kids to sit and pull down books from an adjacent bookshelf.
Layers of organic texture — a jute rug, a woven linen window panel, white walls — created a gender-neutral style for this room shared between siblings.

The dining room is one of Curtis’ favorite rooms in the house. A deep dark blue (Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball) amid a crisp white wall delivers the right amount of design nuance. “It’s not overly complicated,” Curtis says. “There’s something about that combination that I absolutely love.”
Curtis can easily swap out wall art, chairs, plants or move the rug around to create a new design relatively quickly and easily. “The way I set up the foundational elements gives me flexibility,” she says.

“I definitely believe in longevity and in your space going the miles,” says Curtis, pictured here.

I also enjoy sweeping the floors. Every morning before heading out the door. The Roomba just sits in the corner, waiting like an understudy...
