Bathroom of the Week: Historic Home’s Charming Addition
A new master bathroom in a Seattle Craftsman blends traditional looks with modern convenience
These Seattle homeowners had lived in their Craftsman bungalow for nearly a decade when they decided it was time to add a second floor to provide more space for their family of five. The new master suite includes a traditional-style bathroom with modern upgrades, including wainscoting made out of a waterproof plastic composite, a chic freestanding tub and a decked-out walk-in shower for two.
The traditional-style wainscoting that wraps around the bathroom is made out of a contemporary material — a plastic composite that’s 100% waterproof. “The waterproof wainscoting allowed us to place the freestanding tub right next to it without fear of water damage,” Henderson says.
The Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec print hung above the tub inspired the wall color for the room. “It’s a light and airy shade of sky blue, which is ideal for Seattle, where the sky is often gray,” the designer says.

The floor is covered in a porcelain tile that’s meant to mimic the look of gray marble. The shower walls are covered in a classic white subway tile, and the custom shower niche is lined with the same tile and pattern used for the vanity backsplash. The shower includes an affixed shower head on the left wall and a handheld shower head on the right one. The shower floor is covered in blue-gray penny tiles.
A closeup photo highlights the new wainscoting and polished chrome towel bars. “The homeowners bought all new bathroom linens after the project was complete,” Henderson says. “They found these bath towels with a pattern that complements the penny tiles covering the shower floor.”

Designer Raina Henderson says her clients’ house is located in a historic neighborhood in Seattle that’s full of Craftsman homes from the early 1900s. “They love their neighborhood, so they decided to build an addition rather than buy a new house,” Henderson says. “But it was important that the new addition kept the character of the original.”
A new double vanity made out of stained cherry wood is a nod to the home’s Craftsman style. The vanity includes matte black hardware that picks up the black metal door handles used throughout the house. The vanity is topped with white quartz, and the backsplash is made out of glass and marble laid in a flower petal pattern. Four wall sconces and a pair of pharmacy-style medicine cabinets finished in polished chrome add a contemporary touch.
