Bold Kitchen Makeover With Blue, Black and Brass Touches
Classic details and modern amenities make this remodeled kitchen in Westchester County, New York, a winner
With three young children and relatives that visit frequently, these Westchester County, New York, homeowners wanted a kitchen that could serve as a hub for their entire family. Two new glass-paneled doors leading to the backyard, a built-in desk and a separate refrigerator and freezer are among the functional updates, while a dusty blue island and stylish black-and-brass fixtures visually bring the new kitchen to life.
Before: The previous kitchen had ceramic tile floors, an island with two counter stools and a packed appliance wall that included a cooktop, oven, microwave and refrigerator. A sliding glass door led to the backyard.
After: New dark-stained oak flooring replaces the ceramic tiles. Two glass-paneled doors on either side of the sink wall now lead to the backyard and the new pool. The new island doesn’t accommodate seating but it does provide a lot of storage and a prep sink. “Adding seating to the island would’ve restricted the flow of the space,” Luisa Garces says.

The design team at Bilotta Kitchens added a custom vent hood made of black metal and brass to complement the gas range and to pick up on the pendant lights above the island. The backsplash is classic white subway tile and the countertops are light gray marble. “This kitchen is a good example of transitional style,” Luisa Garces says. “It features a nice balance of traditional and contemporary details.”
One wall of the kitchen now holds a glass-door refrigerator and a separate stainless steel freezer. “Since this is a hub for extended family, having a separate refrigerator and freezer allows the homeowners to stock up on food and beverages,” the designer says.
The contemporary glass-top dining table, chairs and sleek pendant light above are also design selections made by the wife.

A corner of the kitchen includes a new built-in desk, which Luisa Garces says is a great feature for families with young kids. “It’s nice for parents to have a spot to jot down notes, make grocery lists and update calendars.”

Designer Rita Luisa Garces says the wife, who works in the fashion industry, has a keen eye for details. “She picked out the black-and-brass pendant lights that helped set the tone for the space,” she says. The dusty blue paint on the island base is another selection made by the homeowner. “It’s a soft blue that doesn’t compete with the black-and-brass elements,” Luisa Garces says.
