There wasn't a flat place in our yard when we bought 20 years ago. We've carved out small areas here and there and finally had a stone patio built with a waterfall and pond nestled in beside it. The backyard slope was tamed with large stepping stones inter-planted with dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon 'Nana'). Grass just would not grow there. Strawberry begonia, hostas, ferns, tiarella, hardy begonia and hellebores dot the hillside and manage rain water. (zone 7b-8, shade) The potting shed was built into a small hill opposite the screened in porch. Lots of sweat equity over the years!
