2nd Floor Bathroom
Our second floor bathroom measuring 8x8 is situated along an eave and the tight shower configuration and 1990's décor didn't speak turn of the 20th century to me. It had two doorways, one from the hall and one from the master bedroom. To capture additional wall space, we redesigned the wall adjoining the bedroom. The door to the bedroom was removed and the opening walled in; the rest of the wall was bumped 24 inches depth into the bedroom for a width of 48 inches, to accommodate a vanity in the bathroom without taking any space away from the 8x8 footprint. I opted to replace the shower with a freestanding pedestal tub with a freestanding tub filler and hand sprayer.
Home designer Ed Buckingham of Colonial Design helped us to reconfigure the layout. We closed off the bedroom doorway to use as wall space and bumped 4 feet of it into the bedroom to accommodate a sink vanity alcove.
Here are later mockups I created to decide on the layout of the vanity backsplash. I'm planning to go with the second concept, using the seven Porteous tiles on the back and one deco tile per side wall of the vanity alcove. Marina Bosetti is the artist that I purchased the Sunflower and Poppy art tiles from.
At first I wanted to relocate the shower to where the wall was full height by the pedestal sink. With the room built into a eave, wall height was a constraint. I ultimately opted to replace the shower with a standalone tub where the pedestal sink had been.
