Sophisticated Girl’s Bedroom Perfect for Now and Later
Dusty pink paint, white shiplap and a cozy daybed make this girl’s bedroom in New Jersey a lovely space to grow into

When these New Jersey parents bought their home in Hoboken, they knew the two rooms on the third floor would make fantastic bedrooms for their young daughters. The rooms just needed a little love first. Designer Breeze Giannasio transformed the younger daughter’s bedroom into a space that’s youthful and fun but also sophisticated enough to grow up along with its occupant.

Location: Hoboken, New Jersey
Size: About 250 square feet (23 square meters)
Designer: Breeze Giannasio Interiors
The color pink was a must-have for the young girl’s bedroom, Giannasio says, but choosing a hue that was more sophisticated than saccharine was key. “The pink we selected for the walls is a muted shade that picks up the light in the room,” the designer says. “We also added shiplap and trim in a soft shade of white that helps to tone down the overall look.”
The ceiling follows the roofline, adding visual dimension and interest to the space. Giannasio took advantage of the architecture to create separate functional areas, including a space for the bed, a reading chair with nearby bookshelves and a stylish daybed located in a window nook on the opposite end of the room.

Giannasio added shiplap to the lower half of the bed wall to create what she calls an oversize headboard effect. Painted porcelain bird figurines are artfully scattered on the wall above the shiplap. A task floor lamp can be swiveled to light up different areas of the bed. The brown area rug is made of a durable cotton that will hold up well to foot traffic and slumber parties.

The window nook daybed is topped with a faux fur blanket and an assortment of throw pillows. It’s a comfy spot for curling up with a good book or for hosting a friend during a sleepover.
Giannasio maximized storage by having custom built-ins added on either side of the nook. The built-in on the left opens up like a closet and is often used as a secret clubhouse for the daughter and her friends. The one on the right includes multiple pullout drawers that are used to store clothing.

Giannasio used kid-size furniture in the bedroom that can easily be swapped out for larger pieces in coming years. “I hung the round mirror at her face level,” she says. “It can be raised higher when she grows up.”
